Such a day. Currently backing up the iPad I bought last year. It has never been backed up, because, of course, I would NEVER drop the thing, and if I did, it would hit carpet or something and never shatter. EVER. And besides, I've never dropped one or had any issues... except for today.

Dropped it. Shattered the screen. One corner is dinged, and the screen hit just right on a corner of the foot of the desk/table at work. Of course I had to buy the BIG one, 1 TB!

Still charges, still works; just I don't think the screen will hold up much since it is spider-webbed in cracks and tiny slivers of glass. I have been using the 50GB plan from Apple, as much of what I do should be well served using this amount. I had to get the 2 TB size to back it up (31 minutes and counting up at the time of this writing). Can't back it up on the MBP, because the iPad has the USB-C port and the MBP doesn't have anything that would work (USB-A, TB2) and I don't have any adapter that will work. I will continue to look for something that may allow me to backup locally, and not have to maintain a storage plan much larger than what my needs really are just to keep this beast backed up.

Fortunately, I got AppleCare+ on it (because, you know, I MIGHT need it RollingEyesSmiley5). When I bought it, I came really close to NOT getting AppleCare for it because I have never had to use it before. I'm getting old, apparently, and hanging on to stuff seems to be problematic some days. And yes, it is still covered so I'm not out a lot of money.

I can get it repaired at Worst Buy tomorrow probably, or the Apple Store Saturday or Sunday. I'm not necessarily in a hurry to get it fixed--I can wait. Which would you do?

Apple Store, unless there's a really good independent that takes AppleCare.

If you wanna prolong the life of it, you could put a tempered glass screen protector over it, and then you won’t get shards of glass in your fingers. You just won’t be able to ever remove the screen protector, because it will bring pieces of glass with it.

Drops happen, glass is a ceramic - a single impurity could have meant it was vulnerable.

Enjoy your time at the Apple Store. I wouldn’t go anywhere else unless you had to.

I've had four device screens repaired over the years. Mrs. cbelt3 and I have a bit of arthritis going (hers is worse) and gravity steals stuff from our hands sometimes.

Apple store repairs if you have Applecare + are the thing to do. Otherwise finding a 'phone repair' shop that will do the screen swaps is worth it.. typically half the cost of the repair from Apple.

Apple or AGI Repair.

Half the quality as well. If you want Apple quality, a mall shop isn't going to do it for you. None of them use OEM parts. The color accuracy and depth will be off as well as digitizer performance. Will you notice? Only you will know.

I use that iPad for drawing/sketching/“painting”. So yes, I will be not happy if the color profile, depth, and/or accuracy changes. When I put in the repair at the Apple website it brings up these other locations; I thought I would check to see what others said, and their reasoning if given. I think the Apple store for repair is the way to go.

Those other locations may be Apple Authorized Service Providers. In that case, they will be using OEM parts. I don't think they will be less expensive than Apple though.

You may also be able to call Applecare and get a mail in box for it and skip the stores completely.

Apple is going to replace the iPad for you for $49 since you have AppleCare+. If you want, you can just call AppleCare and they will send you out a replacement so you don't have to go to a store if you don't want to. You can also do an express replacement to get the replacement faster if you wish but they will put a hold on your credit card to ensure you return the broken one.
