I'm in Japan and received a possible tsunami warning text a couple of hours ago from the local authorities, which has since been cancelled.

That was not far from my cousin's homestead. I will inquire.

Oops! Not near at all.

Biggest US quake in decades. Fortunately no significant tsunami, and quite a ways from (most) civilization.

Two things: I had not realized that Anchorage had a 9.2 quake in ‘64 (which if my understanding is correct, would be like 150-200x larger quake than the World Series quake of ‘89.) smiley-shocked003

Secondly, apparently when the initial danger had passed, the article I read said that the Alaskan public radio station started playing an earthquake playlist (I feel the earth - move - under my feet…)

The ‘64 quake is still way bigger then anything since in Alaska. As they say it isn’t just the quality but the quantity in this case the duration. ‘64 went on for 4 minutes. Imagine being in a house being shaken for that long.

The 1964 quake was a pretty big deal. It altered the coastline.

Or for four and a half minutes on the eighth floor of a high-rise:

Big quakes don’t tend to shake harder, they just last longer.

That '64 earthquake did quite a bit of damage in my little CA town: Eleven dead and the downtown business area was destroyed. It happened in the early morning hours.

I was watching TV last night and my Watch went off three times, telling me about AK quakes.

Oh yes, the '64 quake cracked the sidewalk in front of my parents house here in Seattle!

My dad was sent up to AK by his bank to help facilitate emergency loans for reconstruction after it happened.

Didn't even receive the phone-blaring tsunami alarm here in Anchorage (on my phone, at least - others did)
