I've bought the dollar store brands which work ok, but fall apart after a few minutes. Are there good alternatives?

Ordered a bag full, like 100, off eBay, for $15 a few years back. Still working through them. So cheap it doesn't matter if you only get a few uses.

'Oh My Clean' @ bezosville [www.amazon.com]

Work & hold up well, ships from Amz so no USPS 'delays'.

They're called melamine sponges, and I'm told you can get them in boxes of 100 from China for very cheap, like $8 shipped (have not tried that myself though).

Ditto. The ones I bought last for the job I'm doing. They're grey instead of white.

I still haven't finished off the bag.

They use melamine for everything!

Good suggestions, I'll check out the brand name stuff first.

For those of you that use those Magic Erasers, what types of surfaces of you using them on. On certain surfaces, can they dull the shine/finish over time?

They are abrasive - I would not recommend their use on any scratchable surface.

It is what it is.

I use them to clean grime off of arcade cabinets I'm restoring. They do an astonishingly good job, I wound up reselling a new control panel overlay I'd purchased for one game after the Magic Eraser cleaned the old one up so well I no longer saw a need to replace it.

I don't use them for everyday cleaning, so no opinion on the effects of regular use.

I limit use to things that can take a good scrubbing, like porcelain, glass, enamel or stainless steel. Or perhaps a painted wall where the color layer is deep and it will eventually be repainted. I don't use it on the polymer composite tub, or an automobile finish, for example.

Not sure what product people are using, but I've not had our official Magic Erasers take the finish off anything. But we also do not rub them hard.

I've used them on paint, flooring and a variety of finishes.

The only time I really pushed was dealing with some issue with an older car. Did a great job of removing all sorts of gunk etc while leaving the paint job still shiny.
