Cleveland as only Cleveland can...

The Cleveland Indians made a huge announcement that it was changing its name to the Cleveland Guardians.. somebody forgot to check availability first. The Cleveland Guardians are the city's roller derby team and have been for the last decade and even runs the website clevelandguardians.com.

Alexandra Roberts, a trademark law expert at UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law and author of Athlete Trademarks: Names, Nicknames, & Catchphrases, cut to the heart of the matter -- “The trademark—and probably also the domain name—are worth too much to the baseball team at this point not to simply pay for them, whatever the price.”

“No persons are more frequently wrong, than those who will not admit they are wrong.”

Reminds me of Apple naming the iPhone knowing that Cisco owned the name.

That is jaw-droppingly idiotic.

I hope the roller derby team gets paid handsomely to give up the name.

Forget it, Drew -- it's Cleveland.

It is what it is.

They can share the name, remember the NY Giants and St Louis Cards? The website might cost them a schekel or two.

Roller Derby? What's the trade value of a roller derby franchise? Probably cheaper just to buy the derby team outright.

There's also not a small chance that the Cleveland formerly Indians were well aware and already in negotiation, and this reporter just thinks they have a scoop.

Exactly. Fun story, but the only thing that's really in question is the domain name which would just be a redirect anyway. They don't have guardians.com either which is arguably more valuable. Probably hard to come up with any new mascot name these days that isn't taken. Paid and organic search results will easily point to the league managed mlb.com/guardians. Try that one and see where it leads you.

But just in case, I just registered clevleandguardians.com. That typo is gonna make me a billionaire. If I had just registered amaxon.com in 1999!!!
