in keeping with Steve G and music (a subject near and dear to my heart as Euro cars of the 50's, 60's and 70's, tequila and sweets [music, not Steve. nothing personal, mate]).

What is you favorite perfect pop single?
Not your favorite song. Favorite perfect pop single.

I'd call a pop single a large seller around the planet, usually clocks in under 4:00 and usually some kind of love subject.
A song that no matter how often you hear it brings a smile to your face and/or a very fond memory.

I would not call Pink Floyd pop songsters (Lucifer Sam? come on!), not the Stones (OK maybe Angie).

Whitney Houston, Celine, Beatles, Abba, Britney, Adele, Gaga, Michael Jackson, make pop.

But feel free to break the "rules" any way you like.

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac.

Depends on what day you ask me - today the answer is Behind Blue Eyes. Erase your memory and try to listen to it as if it was the first time again. It covers a lot of ground for a pop tune. [www.youtube.com]

Most days, I would probably answer with a Motown single, but not today...

Lollipop (1958)
The Chordettes

[Pre-Chorus]
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop *pop*

[Chorus]
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop *pop*

[Verse 1]
Call my baby Lollipop
Tell you why
His kiss is sweeter than an apple pie
And when he does his shaky rockin' dance
Man I haven't got a chance
I call him
[Chorus]
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop

[Verse 2]
Sweeter than candy on a stick
Huckleberry, cherry, or lime
If you have a choice he'd be your pick
But Lollipop is mine...

[Chorus]
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop

[Chorus]
Crazy way he thrills-a me
Tell you why
Just like a lightning from the sky
He loves to kiss me
'Till I can't see straight
Gee, my Lollipop is great!
I call him...
[Chorus]
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop

[Ending Verse]
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop oh Lollipop

Yes, to me it is.

pop music:
n. Music intended for or accepted by a wide audience, usually with a commercial basis and distinguished from classical music and folk music.
n. music of general appeal to teenagers; a bland watered-down version of rock'n'roll with more rhythm and harmony and an emphasis on romantic love

Great song! [Just My Imagination by the Temptations] (It might be pop but it's not very "poppy" pop, although I don't know if that matters.)

I know this is probably blasphemy, but I prefer the version by Gwyneth Paltrow with Babyface (from the movie Duets).

Well, yeah... if you're using the term "pop music" to distinguish it from classical music (which is just the pop music of its era) or folk music (much of which is considered pop already), then there you go.

However, it is widely acknowledged that while many genres exist within the realm of popular music (soul, R&B, rock, punk and heavy metal, to name just a few), the term "pop music" is set aside specifically to describe popular music... generic enough? is that the right way to describe it?... that does not fit into any of those sub-genres.

For instance, the songs "Dark Lady" or "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" I named above - those songs would NEVER be considered to be anything but pop songs. Ever. One would not say the same thing of the Temptations' "Just My Imagination" (soul/R&B) or AC/DC's "Back in Black" (hard rock) or the Sex Pistols' "God Save the Queen" (punk rock), although all of those songs fall into the pop music genre as you've defined it.

It is what it is.

great Chordettes songs.

when I worked at Record Plant in NYC, Patty Smyth and Scandal were in working on the LP Warrior.
My god that woman had a killer voice!
Like Donna Summer in the same time.

Scandal got paid @#$%& for their efforts and I was sad to see Patty leave the band. Better management would have landed her in a better place....musically.
Her most recent record still shows her in fine voice, but pop is a young persons game, unfortunately.

Like Billie and Lana del, dull and stinkin wealthy.

I define 'pop' as anything played on AM top 40 radio stations in its day

wiki: "Behind Blue Eyes" is a song by the English rock band the Who, recorded in 1971. It was the second single from their fifth album Who's Next and was originally written by Pete Townshend for his Lifehouse project.

They cut a single of it and it peaked in the US at #34

Jimi Hendrix qualifies too

Downtown - Petula Clark

First 45 I ever bought. It still resonates with me.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Dunno if I can pick just one, but of those named above, I would second the following for special mention:

Semi-Charmed Life
I want to Dance With Somebody - Whitney at her best and upbeat before the long fall
Downtown - this one encapsulates the 60’s for me
Livin' La Vida Loca
Heart of Rock and Roll
Hard Day’s Night, but then you’ve opened up a can of worms - Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, Come Together…

For me, if we’re including Prince, When Doves Cry or Let’s Go Crazy (Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today…)

Wedding Bell Blues, or any of a number by 5th Dimension (Marilyn McCoo had a great, uniquely clear singing voice)

Have to mention The Beach Boys - how about California Girls?

If Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody

I’d also add Hotel California, although it’s a little longer and more serious than “pop”

…and fun fact: in case you were wondering, Stairway to Heaven was never released as a single.

Reviewing my Music (formerly iTunes) library for lots of "stars", very, very few are conventional "Pop".

Closest I come up with:

Jenny Take A Ride (must be played loud!)

Pipeline

Sweet Black Angel Maybe NOT actually be "Pop"

Fernando

Billion Dollar Babies

Samba da Bahia Not at all "Pop", but this is my current "brings a smile" favorite.
(I have a thing for Brazilian pop/jazz)
