I’m thinking of recording some podcast like stories and probably prayer sessions for Mom so she can hear my voice while she is in the nursing home.(*) A decent microphone would probably help. Something I can use with the iPhone or the Mac … is it better to use the Mac ? Editing ?

(*) Yesterday morning I sat with her and said the Rosary. At one point she was praying along with me, which was more than she has said in a few weeks. It’s a form of meditation and very calming for her. I plan on doing one in English, one in French, and one in Latin for her.

You can get pretty good quality just recording with your iPhone and its built-in mic. Just make sure you're about 6" away. And be mindful of the acoustics of where you're recording - a dead space is best. Often a walk-in closet or similar works great.

If you need to do real editing, I'd use Audacity on a computer.

Anything more than quick edits will be easier on the desktop, unless you're a millennial who grew up speaking with your thumbs.

I bought this mic for Zoom and for recording my part for my choir's youtube performances during the pandemic. It is an Amazon Basics. It's highly rated. There are cheaper, but then you are into the randomly-generated, container-ship brand names.

It might be overkill for some, but I always recommend a refurb Apogee Mic for USB mic requests. Double check that this comes with the stand.

Ditto on the built in, and voice memos. I’d edit in GarageBand if needed, but the project seems simple enough that a little prep re: continuity, would yield solid results.

it sounds very good.
For spoken word, any of the modern USB mics of known origin are gonna be pretty good.
Audacity is a very good and easy to learn record/edit app.

The biggest issue, is controlling echo and ambient noises. I bought a recording barrier from Monoprice for my wife to use in her podcast. We also hung blankets from the walls to kill echo. There's not much I could do about the AC/Furnace or refrigerator/freezer running.
