FRIKKIN' MICROSOFT OFFICE/WORD! MUST...NOT...USE...FIST...OF...DEATH!

So late last night, I'm getting ready to edit a document in 2016 MS Word on my MBA, and the icon just stays in the doc, jumping up and down for maybe 5 minutes. Weird!

So I try all the usual voodoo-switch to another account, reset SMC and PRAM, run Disk Utility, run Disk Utility from the Recovery partition. Nada. Ok, I run Etrecheck--nada.

At this point, I'm getting worried--I'm leaving on vacation soon to a very remote location, and if this is a hardware problem, I want it fixed ASAP. But first I have to make sure it's not a software problem.

I remove plists. I remove preferencepanes. I remove extensions. Nada.

Finally, on my 39th Google search, I find a guy who had the same problem, and solved it. In his case, a company firewall was stopping Office from calling the mothership. When he switched to a non-firewalled connection, the problem went away.

_Then_ I remembered that our home router is set up to block all traffice after midnight, to encourage us all to get offline, but there's still a WiFi signal--the router effectively disconnects itself from the Internet. Sure enough, as soon as I told the router to give me a connection, Word started up in a second or two.

The screwy thing is that if I turn WiFi off on the MBA, there is no real problem-maybe a couple of extra bounces.

I'm so, so, p!ssed about this. Hours wasted, because MS places undue restrictions on its users. HULK SMASH!

Good find, who would have thought of that.

I tried Little Snitch at some point, I don’t recall if I bought a license or if I had a free trial, but it would catch thing like this. It flagged so many things but I got tired… I turned it off.

I bought a legit copy of office through M$ Home Use Program several years ago, and could never get it to activate. Was on the phone with tech support for hours. They kept telling me I needed to upgrade my OS, even though I was using a supposedly supported one. Even tried on a laptop with the latest OS... nope. I finally just went and downloaded a hacked copy. It worked fine.

Office checks for updates when it launches - perhaps if you shut off that preference, it won't happen ??

You clearly aren't someplace where literally everyone you interact with on a daily basis uses MS products.

I hate it. But everyone I work with uses Office. So to maintain compatibility, I use Office. My daughter's schools all use Office, so to maintain compatibility she uses Office. Wife uses Office all day for work. Do we HAVE to use Office at home? Nope. Well, the girl does, but why would we all learn and use Office all day only to come home and switch to a completely different, much more kludgy Office clone solution?

Office is simply the least worst solution.

I don’t see what’s the issue…
If you get a .doc, open with pages.app.
If you see a warning, do not despair. Read and click it away.
If you send a document, export as rtf, doc or pdf.

Last time I thought about that, I came to the conclusion that the default styles in word included some weird font installed by MS apps, hence the constant warnings.
Weird that some ppl are willing to challenge viruses, but not fonts.

Edit!
Not saying that about anyone on this thread, but in the general consensus….

How does Pages handle change tracking and comments in balloons off to the side? Switching from endnotes to footnotes?
Etc.....

I have no idea, but if one is collaborating with someone, I’d expect to have communication channels available.
I’m not saying Word has no reason to exist, it’s a powerful application.
But it is avoidable if necessary or preferred.
Back when AppleWorks was a thing, my computer was rock solid. Peers who I helped set theirs with the same configuration as mine, plus office, developed stability issues within months.
Then again, not in a corporative setting…

I've used MS Office on my home Mac for decades with no issues.

It is what it is.

Of course, it’s a fine piece of software, I understand why it’s a standard. It also uses a lot of resources, which can become corrupted nefariously or just by rounding a zero here and there.
Back in the 90’s, music workstations were a balancing act, with extensions, drive cards, interfaces, buffering, external dsp…
If it was not fluidly configurated, no real time performance.
And it was then when I noticed the effect of the office suit on the system. I also suspected of OMS (opcode/open music system), but being a standard for DAWs, I had to work around that.
Anyway, since I found out of the hogging, I’ve avoided it, and except for a period when I had to use excel (chose to run on a VPC), I’ve been fine.
Not an anti MS (I actually trust them right behind Apple), but having to use proprietary software only to coexist is not cool in my book. I’m loony like that haha…

Been using libre office for the last couple months. Aside from the fact that it crashes if you double click on a “recent document“ I’ve had no trouble.

I don't think that means what you think it means.
