A "what-if" moment with a skunk

This morning my wife drove me to the airport for an early morning flight.

It was still dark when we left the house and ss we were driving down the hill something ran across the road in front of us. We could see the stripes and tail, and knew it was a skunk.

We then spent a few minutes discussing what might have happened if we hit it. If I tried walking into an airport, going through security and sitting on a plane for 6 hours while smelling like a skunk.

Has anyone had or known someone with a similar experience?

I had a coworker who accidentally locked a skunk in his detached garage for a couple of days.

Eventually he tore the garage down, it was unsalvageable.

Hitting it with the car doesn't get the "juice" on you (unless you're in a convertible!). The smell from the vents, etc, or getting in and out of the car, will dissipate by the time you're in the terminal.

Now, if you hit it on a motorcycle, you could be in for some issues...

Great and frighting at the same time!

I've had skunks charge me before. They're fearless!

I have friends who had a skunk provide a blast of scent in their garage. They had to move out for a couple of weeks. And their kids went to school smelling of skunk and there was nothing to be done. (My daughter was a classmate of one of the kids and played soccer with her.) This was middle school so you can imagine the situation.

Skunks are still around and we give them space. And they are weird. My wife and I drove home one summer evening a few years ago, and our headlights showed a neighborhood cat and a skunk sitting on the neighbor's front porch enjoying the evening together....

I know, this is completely weird and brings my very being into question....

I somewhat like the smell of a skunk.

a few years ago, I let my dog out the front door. now, my front door is about 6 feet from the sidewalk. as soon as I opened the door, I saw a juvenile skunk staring at me from the sidewalk.

faster than I could say, "shiiiiiiiiiiii......" it was over. dog limped in the house, reeking the place up like it's never been. lasted for a few weeks, although less and less every day. it seems to be logarithmic. having a whole house fan helped immensely, but it was still wretched.

As a kid, I remember when my family moved out to Utah, Dad found probably the only skunk for miles and wound up straddling it, pulling the camper. The rest of us, in the car with Mom driving, drove into the cloud shortly afterwards. We found out why the camper jerked suddenly and then straightened out. The skunk Wes unhurt, to the best of my knowledge. The camper, however, retained that smell for a LONG time, especially when it rained or was otherwise damp.

If they actually made good pets, I'd have one, with its scent glands removed of course. But they don't make good pets. Dammit.

Not necessarily true.

... NOT an easy pet to keep, but then neither are some other exotics.

When I was a kid, I had a friend with a descented skunk for a pet.

Didn't seem to be much of a problem at all. His family treated it much like the dog. Even took it for walks on a leash.

I almost hit one on my bicycle during a late night ride. That would not have ended well.

We have a bunch in my neighborhood. One or two visits almost every night as they forage for food.

I never realized this before I lived here but you can smell them even when they're just walking around not spraying. It's not intense like when they spray or get hit by a car, but when I have my windows open I can smell when they're in my yard (depending on wind direction).

I had a late-night encounter with one back when I was up in Boston. Walking down the street at night, but in plain view on a well-lit street. He/she saw me, I saw him/her, we were literally walking towards each other (he/she was just totally brazen, walking the sidewalk like he/she owned it). When we saw each other, he/she did the back legs flip up / lifting tail thing... and I ran up just as fast as I could!

NSFW, but pretty funny: [www.youtube.com]

I have a friend in Maine who has a skunk family that comes around in the mornings to be fed. The mom sits between his legs while he tosses treats to the babies. The mom has been hanging out for a couple of years and is quite friendly at this point.

We keep a bottle of this around for when our dog has an encounter with a skunk. Works miracles on skunk odor on dog or cat.

Available at Petco or PetSmart.

It’s nice that they have a very distinktive coloration.
