Not really. Think of looking through a piece of Saran Wrap. No matter how well it's sharpened, it'll always be blurry. Just really sharp blurry.

Your eye doc isn't likely to correct for a cataract short of removing it. There might be some forms or locations of cataracts that will be easier to correct for awhile, but eventually they need removal.

Blurry vision can be corrected only if the image being viewed can be focused on the appropriate spot on the back of the eye. Cataracts are a fogging of the natural lens of the eye; in essence, they reduce the amount of light passing into the eye. There comes a point where glasses will not help, as they don’t magnify the light. Even if they did, the light would be refracted by the cataract and your vision would only be fuzzier.

Unfortunately the only real solution at this time is to replace the lens.

Cataracts gradually (or sometimes quickly) cloud over the lens until it becomes opaque. This happened to me...one day there was a tiny bit of blurriness, two months later the lens became completely opaque and I was completely blind in one eye. In fact it was difficult for the doctor to select a replacement lens for that eye because it's critical that the dimensions of the lens be measured, which can't happen with an opaque lens. Fortunately he had taken some measurements early on so was able to fudge an adequate estimate. Based on my experience you should absolutely not wait...get yourself to an ophthalmologist before things go too far downhill.

I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

.....not for cataracts.......it's a blurring so you have to have it corrected, otherwise there is no way to see clearly.....

Cataracts - can blurry vision be corrected with glasses?
Short answer, no.

Consult with a Ophthalmologist with credentials for surgical correction
and hospital privileges. If you're one of us oldsters w/ Medicare it is a
covered procedure. I had both eyes done and the total cost to me was
under $400 including the IOL lenses, all the meds, and all the follow up.
20/20 both eyes!

edit: corrected cost

That's what I was afraid the answer would be. I guess I'll just have to continue living with blurry vision as there isn't any other option available to me. Thanks.

Without getting too personal, what's preventing you from having cataract surgery? Most insurance plans cover cataract surgery.

Not to be an alarmist but if you let this go too far, it could become irreversible and result in blindness. Get thee to an ophthalmologist. If insurance or $$ is an issue contact your nearest medical school.

Luckily for you, pre-existing condition exclusions are no longer allowed under Obamacare. You really need to either get yourself insured and get this taken care of soon or as RgrF suggested find an educational institution that will do it for low cost. The alternative is gradually becoming completely blind...and yes, that should scare the bejeezus out of you...it did me.

Nope, but cataract surgery will correct your vision to 20/20. I had it done a few years ago (early onset cataracts run in both sides of my family). I'd been severely nearsighted and had to wear contacts for about 30 years. Week after the surgery I threw them away, and have only needed readers since.

It is worth going into debt to get the cataracts removed. Been there, done that. Start a go fund me page if necessary.

Cost of cataract surgery: [health.costhelper.com]

In the "good used car" range.

This is just a site I pulled up via Google, which I know anyone can do, but maybe it helps get the ball rolling.

Another thought. If you haven't been to a doctor how do you know its cataracts rather some other condition?

Think of looking through a piece of Saran Wrap.

That's how cataracts start.

Well, not by looking through Saran Wrap, but look as though you're looking through Sarah Wrap.

And actually, not even that.

It's possible to see only an area of your vision slightly occluded by the beginnings of a cataract.

As it progresses, eventually it would be as though looking through waxed paper, or condensation on a windshield.

Successful cataract surgery is very common place, and generally low risk.

I'm sorry to hear your financial situation precludes apparently even diagnosing your current optical health.

Also I think it's accurate and fair to say the Affordable Care Act stopped being 'Obamacare' shortly after Obama left office.

Sorry to hear about your situation, Dewguy. However, as suggested by RgrF, there are very low cost (and perhaps free) options for you. Get yourself on the internets and google around for solutions. In a mere ten seconds of googling I found this, which might be very helpful to you: [missioncataractusa.org] . Note that someone asked where you were located, which could result in more specific recommendations. However, you haven't yet answered so we cannot as yet help you there.

Also want to throw out coverage ideas you potentially may not be aware of. I think you’re in Michigan? MI took Medicaid expansion and covers adults under 65 up to a certain income level through Healthy Michigan. Vision is included in coverage. You know your situation and can explore whether you would qualify. It’s absolutely worth exploring if you have not yet.

Beyond that, ACA enrollment is open to all adults (under 65) through august 15 (meaning today/Sunday) with coverage effective September 1. After 8/15, midyear enrollment is limited to certain circumstances.

If you happen to be 65 (I don’t think you are, but just in case), you potentially could enroll in Medicare to be effective as early as September 1 if certain circumstances exist. 800-Medicare would be your contact in this case.

I can't afford to pay for an eye exam and find out the only option is for
surgery that I don't really trust the outcome.

Is there any chance you qualify for Medicaid or Veterans' benefits?
Choosing a qualified Surgical Ophthalmologist should alleviate your mistrust.
(btw, Surgical Ophthalmologists are not the same as "eye doctors".)

Based on my personal treatment, here's what happens:
  • Initial exam & tests of both eyes.
  • Return for consult & schedule for 1st treatment of "worst eye".
  • Pre-Op exam & begin eye-drop medications, lens (IOL) ordered.
  • OP Surgery; an exam, relaxation period, surgery, recovery;
40 minutes later I'm out the door.
  • Two days later, follow-up exam and schedule for the other eye.
Three weeks later, 'rinse & repeat'.
My surgeon used a Femptosecond Laser. My experiences.

Go to the eye surgeon's office and ask what they can do. Lots (really most) medical providers will make special arrangements for uninsured people who can't pay the list price.

You may not need surgery yet, but you do need to get an evaluation from an ophthalmologist.

The lenses of the eyes cloud gradually with age, changing their refractive index, and leading to noticeable changes in vision. In these early stages, a new prescription can often suffice to restore satisfactory vision. As clouding progresses, correction with glasses becomes more difficult and surgery becomes indicated.

If you can see clearly enough to read, you are likely in the early stages. You have become nearsighted, and this probably accounts for your ability to read without reading glasses.
