I'm SHOCKED to hear people claiming to enjoy the abomination that is bread and butter pickles. So I'm creating a poll to confirm my preexisting beliefs.

Matt,

As a NYer, I believe in traditional NYC kosher dill or the very similar eastern european pickles, i.e. Polish, German, etc. Anything else is BLECH! Bread and butter "pickles" - the quotes are intentional - don't cut it. You may as well toss'em in the trash or compost heap.

Depends on the sandwich, some are better with one some are better with the other. I like both.

My husband only likes dills though.
My daughter hates dills but will occasionally eat a B&B or cornichon. Go figure. grinning smiley

And if we really want to clarify, we need categories to classify fresh pickles versus pickles in a jar sitting on the shelf.

Fresh please...been buying a lot of Grillo pickles lately.

Mark,

I'm a big fan of Grillo's Pickles Hot Italian Dill Spears. Very good pickles. Pull a few spears out of the jar, drop'em in a bowl. Stab'em with a fork and eat until done. No sandwich necessary. Yummy on their own and solid as a side for a slew of dishes.

I’m not a NY'er but I totally agree. They are one of the few vegetable products I Will Not Eat. I think relish is similar and take same stand on that. Garlic dill are superior and refrigerator pickles are nice.

An alien has entered the discussion!

But, seriously, b&b pickles make sense with something like a hot dog, as they are essentially like relish.

OK, some data (well, not really, not a random sample in any context)....

We have 25 people come for Christmas dinner, and the pickle plate has equal portions of dill, b&b, and straight up sweet. (Having pickles on the table is a Swedish thing according to the family Swedes, who knew?)

One person eschews all pickles (ew, pickle poison!). Among the rest, 33% are switch hitters, only two like sweet, and the rest divide evenly. So

8 switch
7 dill
7 b&b
2 sweet
1 none of the above.

I wonder what national sales say?

PS, not counting the voting among herring lovers who prefer dill vs wine vs sour cream

MrBig,

Nope. Relish and hot dogs do not go together at all. Bun. Hot dog. Mustard. Sauerkraut and the sauerkraut is optional. The relish can be tossed into the pit with the bread and butter pickles. Good for filling in the gaps to ensure anyone buried in the pit suffocates more quickly.

There is a place for it...and not very much. But I agree it can only accompany a nice spicy mustard. And I do like sauerkraut, but only good sauerkraut and that's not easy to find most places.

Now, if you were to even mention ketchup in the same sentence as hot dogs, I'd be forced to put you on ignore.

That said, there is more than room enough in the world for a variety of pickles. As mentioned above - the Grillo ones are a fine dill spear!

It depends on the sammich. Dill chips on burgers and occasionally with tube meat on baked products. B&B on poultry, and possibly on previously mentioned if there are no Dill available. I used to put sweet pickle relish in my tuna (and occasionally on deviled ham or peanut butter) but I don't make tuna often enough any more to justify buying it.

I like toast and jam.

Dill is fine on occasion, like with bread and ham.

MrBig,

Ketchup and hot dogs??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??! Sacrilege! I wouldn't just put you on ignore. You'd be banished to an entirely different plane of existence, one that is occupied by Barney, Telletubbies and imperfect clones of Joey Chestnut, all suffering from projectile vomiting and explosive diarrhea.

B&B pickles were big with folks from the Depression Era and they passed
the 'habit' to their children, etc. My mom made her own.
Mt. Olive (NC) makes good B&B and they even have a no sugar added version.

For relish, I get a fresh deli dill and chop it up. For beef dogs, I add that
relish to some brown mustard and hot dog chili sauce. Heat it up and
dress the dog. Never Ketchup, that's an instant one way ride to hell.

They're both good. Like others here, I prefer one over the other for certain things. For example, on sandwiches, hamburgers, and the like, I like the B&B's. To go on the side along with the sandwich, I actually prefer a regular kosher dill spear. I think it depends on what it's going on/with; the B&B's tend to go better with another condiment, like ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.

I never have understood why some people think it is a sacrilege to put ketchup on a hot dog.
My daughter dips her hot dog in ketchup, why not?
You put ketchup on a burger, why not a hot dog?
If I eat a veggie dog, I don’t eat meat, I put ketchup and relish on it. So there.
Slather me with ketchup and bury me in the sweet pickle pit and throw in some fries and mayo, while you are at it.

We just went to the local "whole food-ish" type store and got a tub of dill spears...my wife nearly choked on the $9.19 price. Worth every penny...she had tried earlier in the day to buy some Trader Joes Sandwich Sliced Dills in the jar. I reminder her that they were like eating leather.

Dill, NY Kosher Dill or Hormans Best Mustard, local to Longuyland.

For a variety of health issues, I pretty much gave up salt bomb foods like pickles & olives back in the mid 90's, so I've been living vicariously thru the wife and kid ever since.... an occasional micro-sample is about all I've been allowed over the last quarter+ century. I didn't consciously pay attention to Costco's pickle pricing, but I wanna say the Grillo's were sub $7 for the hefty-sized tub. Spousal unit had two spears last night w/ dinner, and didn't share, because I was gifted the smaller half of half a garlic-jalapeño olive by her, before she got to the pickles; which she gave two rousing thumbs up to. Based on her reaction, I look forward to a micro-sample at some not-too-distant-future time.
