45 is the new 50...

... not in terms of clothing, or cars, or relationships.

We are talking Colonoscopy!

Serious for a moment... it is now recommended that adults start getting a screening colonoscopy at age 45 (previously it was 50), even in the absence of any symptoms or risk factors.

I have no symptoms and have no major risk factors, but on Wednesday I went to have my first colonoscopy at age 47, and they found cancer. I meet with the surgeon next week, and hopefully, it'll just be cutting it out and no further treatment and full recovery.

BUT... had I waited until I was 50, the cancer would have grown substantially and the outcome much less certain.

So, go call your PCP and get referred to a GI doc to get one when you turn 45, or if you have been putting it off. The prep for the colonoscopy isn't fun, but it beats surgery or dying.

And when the colonoscopy is negative, celebrate with hookers and booze!

Wow! I'm glad the colonoscopy/biopsy detected the cancer early on (relatively). Here's hoping the surgery goes well for you, and you are clear for the rest of your days.

Live long and prosper!

So does this mean with a negative result you could call in different hookers, who specialize in that area?

Either way, here's to a good outcome.

.....they said this on a morning show.....that the age to get went from 50s to 40s.......but some insurance plans have issues covering before 50 because it is not 'necessary'......

Good luck with your procedure. You're still fairly young. I feel you will do well and bounce right back.

Mr. Lahey: A lot of people, don’t know how to drink. They drink against the grain of the liquor. And when you drink against the grain of the liquor? You lose.

Good luck.

I had a severe case of diverticulitis at 51 which went septic and resulted in me having my entire sigmoid colon removed. Had to have a colonoscopy as part of the reattachment surgery and thankfully they said I was good for 10 years. Weird part was that because it was medically necessary, my insurance didn't cover it. If I had just gone in for one for preventative reasons, they would have covered it. To me, that makes no sense whatsoever.

Good luck!

My last one was two years ago when the surgeon nipped several polyps in the bud. Next one is next year. Only other one was at 59. Now age 71 and doc says 40% of his patients my age have some polyps.

Holy cow, good luck! I didn't think my colonoscopy was bad at all, even the stuff you drink, etc. So there's almost no reason not to get one. I had to tell my GP I wanted one. Apparently he was not paying attention. So speak up. They don't care about you like you do.

After your colonoscopy, I would highly recommend NOT eating any red velvet cake for a few days...

I was in my late 40s when I got my first colonoscopy and had to have one every 3 years because they find 8 to 15 polyp everytime.
