In the air, flying to sit vigil with my sisters for my Mom
Posted by: cbelt3
Date: August 21, 2021 03:14PM
She was admitted to a Hospice house two days ago. And she’s no longer able to eat or drink. I may arrive in time, I may not. I recorded a number of prayers in all the languages she knew for my sisters to play for her. I know they give her peace and send my love to her.

Trying to stay calm and peaceful so I’m in the right state of mind. My family and I talked about it last night and I booked a flight. I need to be there. For my mother, for my sisters, and … for me. Blazer and dress shirt and the Jerry Garcia Love tie is in my bag. And I’m wearing my epically loud tie dyed T shirt that made my sisters laugh.

Sorry, belty. I trust that eventually you will understand with grace. It ain't easy.

Apologies to the anonymous forum member affected by my previous sig pic. It was my personal pic of a country expressing great grief as their leader, one of the most recognized people in the world, lay on his deathbed 8 years ago, days before he died. Like a naif, I did not realize it was offensively political, I considered it an expression of deep emotion and a reminder of the mortal coil's nature; that we all, great and small, can only hope to make a difference in our short time here, no matter the personal cost.

I'll post another pic from my work in South Africa that is, hopefully, apolitical.

Well, at 35,000 feet, thanks to flight delays, I got a call from my sister who was with Mom when she passed. Peacefully, happily snoring in her sleep (as she always does.. it’s a family trait). My sisters played my recorded multi lingual prayers for her most of the day. So you could say I was with her virtually.

She was a Woman Of Substance. Raised on a dairy farm In Connecticut but inculcated deep in the mysteries that was New York City Society. She could be found riding her horse, chasing runaway cows, catching frogs in the pond, or ballroom dancing with the boys at the summer house in Southampton. She told the tale of having a bit of a crush on JFK when he was visiting the family home. She met and was desperately pursued by a tall gangly graduate student when she was in college, and was the only woman to successfully avoid being expelled for the crime of getting married ! She raised six children, ans taught all of us to care for an love each other. And most of all to care for and love my younger brother, whose severe handicaps saw us performing experimental physical therapy to teach him how to walk again.

She was tireless in education- of her children, of children in St. Louis inner city where she worked as a substitute English Teacher. She could hold the attention of a whole class of tough seniors!

She was a strong advocate for the environment, co-founding the Coalition for the Environment , chairing the Missouri Solid Waste commission, and pushing… always pushing to make the world better.

At 53 she earned a law degree and passed the bar. Mostly to win arguments with Dad, who had a PhD and would always mention that.

She leaves behind 5 children, 21 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren, having seen the latest on phone video as she was declining.

Aww. Sorry, cbelt3, it is always hard to lose your parent, your mom, your link to your past. May she rest in peace; may you and your siblings and your dad find solace in her overwhelming love for you all. Peace be with you.

R.I.P., Mom.

cbelt. So very sorry for you loss. I lost my mother over a decade ago.

I can tell you it still hurts. Its hurts when I think of her. Sometime when I'm busy doing something else.

But as wiser people than I have said...you get used to the hurt.

You will lose someone you can’t live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart that doesn’t seal back up. And you come through. It’s like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly—that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.

Sorry to hear that belt. Sounds like she lived a good long life and that you have good memories of her to treasure.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
