Letter from department of labor of a state I never lived in
Posted by: space-time

USPS Informed Delivery email show a letter from the Department of Labor of a state I never lived in. And it’s coming to my old address. I moved over a year ago. My best guess at the moment is unemployment insurance fraud. I’ll find more when I get the letter. Credit monitoring service did not detect anything yet. I am not even sure if this would show up on a credit report. If this is indeed unemployment insurance fraud, how do I deal with it?

Post back, after you get the mail.
Right now, could be anything.

Can you tell if it's addressed to your name? Could it possibly be for the current owner of the old house and forwarded by mistake?

My name, my old address.
USPS scans your mail and you get pictures in your email. Very convenient.

Maybe junk email disguised to look like it was from them, but not.

re/USPS Informed Delivery; it's a great service. I have a PO Box and it's saved me many a trip there when it's just junk building up.

It's also good for home-sent mail; you can see what you're supposed to be receiving and note when something hasn't shown up.

It has the “Official Business” marked on the envelope and I can read the logo and header of the letter inside. It is from them.

I got something similar about a year or so ago. I informed my employer about it, and I never heard anything more about it; if it IS unemployment fraud they can (and will) deny it. If anything else needs done either they or the Department of Labor in that state will let you know. You could also write or call them to tell them you have never lived or worked in the state. They will take it from there.

If this indeed is that same fraud scheme going around as it did at the beginning of the pandemic, I’m surprised but not shocked.
