The iPhone 13 may fully SATisfy you

MacRumors is reporting that the iPhone 13 may have the ability to connect to LEO satellites. That would allow users to make calls and send messages without a cellular signal.

Support on the chip doesn't imply support on the device.

You can always install Linux and a bunch of open source software.
Oh wait, no command line? Yeah never mind.

Even if the capability of LEO on a 'Phone came to fruition, that would most likely mean yet another data plan.

Maybe 9-1-1/etc. calls would be free?

On my two rides to MT, there were about three stretches where I lost cell service, so Maps didn't work.

The first time Navigon was still functional, so I had full GPS, but don't remember the situation the second trip.

I've since got an offline map app (Scenic) but may cave and get a Garmin.

If I need help, I'll just pop smoke in the LZ.

Reading about the 13, I was intrigued by the suggestion that it may include time-of-flight Face ID tech. That was a rabbit hole reading about that.

Satellite voice minutes are tres expensive but there are devices (standalone or that connect to your smartphone) that allow you to send/receive text messages at a reasonable price.

Buy the iOS Navigon app instead. One time purchase and you download maps that you need by area (state/country). I've used it in the US and Europe many years ago.

Not only would I if it were possible, I did when it was possible.

I bought the Navigon app when it debuted at MWSF, years and years ago, at a decent 'show price'.

The Navigon app hasn't been available for years, having been killed off by Garmin.

Probably one of the finest GPS apps at the time and for a decade or three since, certainly for 'Phones.

I used and recommended it frequently, singing it's praises here and there, along with lamenting its demise, here and there.

Near as I can tell, Garmin no long offers anything that can be considered a standalone GPS app for a 'Phone.

RIP, Navigon.

These days, if I found an app as good as Navi, it would most likely be a subscription app, which I'm not keen on.

Shirely, you jest.

Would you name a couple?

I'm aware of the SPOT device for riders and hikers, but that needs a subscription as well.

Some kind of uplink from my 'Phone to a Sat would, especially if it could be done on a pre-paid basis- by time on a minutes/yr basis.

(Not likely, I know.)

I have the SpotX (currently inactive) but you have to type on its tiny keyboard.

It's also great for tracking someone out hiking in the wilderness.

RIP, Navigon.

I still use it to measure speed on my boat.

I know of a few LD (long distance) motorcyclists who use a SPOT device so the home-folk can track them, especially when they're riding without a group.

I wanted to keep it alive, even thought Garmin stopped supporting it.

I still have one iPad that supports it, but I can't ever update it or Navi goes T/U.

My iPhone 4S may still have an iOS old enough to run it, and it might be possible to transplant the .ipa somehow.

But it's just too old to fool with.

I like the zümo XT but Garmin the display has a lot of 'info' that eats up the screen real estate.
