I'm alive...
Posted by: PeterB

... that's something. Last night was truly wild. I don't have time now to go into it, because I'm using all my equipment on backup power and want to conserve it, but just wanted everyone to know I am OK (relatively speaking).

Cell reception is iffy at best -- I am only now getting reception back, with at best 1-2 bars and intermittent signal and bandwidth. Most everyone here is in the same boat with that.

No power in the entire city, Entergy says it could be weeks until we have it back, a transmission tower of theirs got blown into the river and they're not sure if they can get us all power without rebuilding it. (Someone also said that there was actually an explosion at the main Entergy facility, but that's an unconfirmed rumor.)

Misery in my house, it's 84oF with 82% humidity. I probably should have bought a generator, but not sure where I'd put it that would be safe. Food in the fridge and freezer is definitely going to spoil faster than I can eat it...

I'm now looking into the possibility of finding some dry ice, but it's very unlikely to be available, as stores are mostly closed. They're telling all of us to stay off the roads for now, but not surprisingly, many are disregarding this.

Anyway, that's where things currently stand...

Edit: did I mention that the NWS weather radio band went off the air? Not sure if it's because their broadcasting tower lost power also, but that made the possibility of getting tornadoes (without warning) extra-fun!

Glad you are ok. Hope you can get away from that for a while.

Entergy says 820k in N.O. area without power. Weather Channel had brief clips of electrical crews scattered in the area ready to go when the storm had passed. They have long days ahead.

Happy to hear you're still alive and in one piece. Sorry conditions are so miserable--and probably will continue to be for some time.

Glad you made it through the tough weather. I wish you well with getting things back to normal. It sucks having the power out for so long. We truly don't realize how much we rely on electricity until it's gone.

Thanks everyone. This will probably be my last message for awhile until I can get some more power and a better internet connection.

Local Lowes are sold out of generators, coolers, that sort of thing... here's hoping Entergy can pull off a minor miracle. (In retrospect, yes, I should have had a generator ... but they're expensive, and potentially very dangerous... I'd really like to be able to use the Prius as a generator, but I'd need an awfully long cord for that, and it'd potentially leave the car vulnerable to theft. I've also thought about solar, though those too are also very expensive, and then you have to worry about something hitting the panels.)

I have been thinking about you all day.
Thanks for reporting in. Glad you weathered the storm, but sorry things are pretty miserable.
I think crews from GA Power are heading down to help get power back, but I imagine it will take a while.

Glad you came through unhurt. Took us about 2 weeks to barely start re-functioning after the 1994 Northridge 'Quake so I expect it'll be some time for you.

Much will depend on how well FEMA responds.

Best news I've heard today..

Just remember, virtually no one in NOLA had air conditioning a little over 50 years ago. If they could do it, you can too.

If you are at HD or Lowes, see if they have solar path lights. They are great at night and can be recharged every day. Amazing how many people never think of using them.

Glad you're ok!

One for the history books. Our power company sent a bunch of trucks that way this morning. Hope they can help, and that power is restored very soon.

When we lost power for a week after Fran in 96, our neighbors all brought our charcoal grills out to the street and we just cooked everything and shared since otherwise it would go bad. Fun, while also miserable.

Stay safe and hydrated.

would that work in his climate? I think those are OK in dry places, not when humidity is 80%

A friend dragged one out this weekend in 80% humidity. Did a good job for about a 10-foot square area of his garage.

Learn from the citizens of the tropics -- A swaying hammock in the shade is very comfortable on a hot humid day. Oddly, sipping hot coffee or even hot water can make you feel cool.

I've also thought about solar, though those too are also very expensive, and then you have to worry about something hitting the panels.)

With an electrical disaster like yours, solar - even with battery - would probably not help unless the entire system was shut off from the grid.

Lots of solar ads imply that you can still run your little world if the power goes out, but unless your system is totally isolated from the grid, this doesn't work.

The total isolation surgery adds a few thousand more to the overall solar bill. Not worth it in most areas, though it's becoming more of a necessity in parts of California where the PoCos are doing Public Service Power Shutoffs when the winds start blowing.

Generators are still king.

Hang in there … happy you made it through the storm!

From what I have heard on the news, it sounds like it might be a good idea to get out of there. I don't know if you have anywhere you can go, but they are saying it could be two weeks or more before power and water is restored. cry smiley
