Neighbor installed a Tesla Powerwall

A neighbor had a three-panel Tesla Powerwall installed, it is first one I've seen. I can't get any details because he won't talk to me since I'm an evil socialist traitor who had a standard size Biden sign (he had a 5'x7' floodlight lite Trump sign).

Still it was cool to see.

Must be a HUGE house. 1 will power an average home for 1-2 days. Many people are repurposing Chevy Volt batteries for that use. They're the same kwh as a powerwall. (about 10kwh). They only sell powerwalls with solar now, so he must have solar installed or he's getting it installed.

he does have solar on the roof (and a Ford F350 in the garage - I'm pretty sure going green isn't his intention)

After the Tesla Megapack fire in Australia, don’t be surprised if home insurance companies become reluctant to insure properties with these in or next to houses.

Got an estimate last year for battery backup. Still too pricey for me with daughter's wedding and me needing a new car. I have 34 ground mount panels totaling peak 11.39 kWp for my all electric house.
I want batteries, estimate called for 2 wall units, don't remember how long that would power things. I did say I wanted enough power to run everything through the night if needed. I suppose one wall array could be rigged to power just the esentials for 12 hours.
Maybe next year after these other expenses are taken care of.

Apples vs oranges? It was a 13 ton industrial type, vs home install.

If your neighbor is getting any solar rebates, then just WHO is the "evil socialist traitor?" Eh…?!

Kinda overkill on the batteries unless this is mansion territory. Not many homes have 30kW systems let alone 30 kW of storage! Unless there's a pool filter running 24/7 and they keep the house at 70°F in the summertime, that's quite a bit of storage.

Maybe they're getting some kickback on that.

What are your electric rates?

Interesting conjecture. Here, the LG battery's been put into hibernation because of some fears that it'll start a fire. Apparently there are thousands of them out there. And who's to say any new one they replace it with will be any more reliable? But the solar company is fearful enough of fire that they've cut off everyone's and are keeping the batts in stasis until they can replace them with new ones.

Here, it's about load shifting since everyone's on a time-of-use schedule of one sort or another. The highest rates are between $0.55-$0.62/kWh. So storing electricity when the prices are lowest during the day and then powering with battery for the hours that the juice is at its highest rate is a good strategy. Store it at $0.20/kWh and then use it when the rates go sky-high.

There’s no reason to use Li-Ion packs for home storage. Iron Phosphate batteries would do just fine, last longer and cost less. Flow batteries would be an even better solution. I’m anxious for Redflow batteries to come to the US from Australia.

I doubt they'd have a choice...Powerwall is U.L. listed.

I think your neighbor is preparing for the collapse of the US economy. I think it is quite plausible. With the US dollar being relatively strong now, it makes sense to get solar panel and battery storage in case inflation really kicks up.

I doubt that inflation can be curbed. Every administration has printed money for years and years. I think prices had remained steady because people spent as fast as they could, but without increases in the base pay, they couldn't buy more expensive items. Now that we are raising the base rate, inflation is sure to follow.

I was listening to NPR, apparently inflation occurs when everyone expects that prices are rising as opposed to the traditional teaching of supply vs demand.

Already happened in 2008.

Incredible buying opportunities.

Also happened in 1929.

Still had power in both cases.

True. But today, as in 1929, we have Tesla to back us up.

You do know that Tesla uses these as a remote backup power supply for their space lasers, don't you?

I don't think Wowzer was saying inflation or economic collapse would interrupt our power supply. I believe the OP is in Florida, and backup power could be nice to have for lots of reasons, but because of inflation, now might be a good time to buy some expensive items..

Yes, but the bubble this time is not the real estate market or the stock market. It is actually the entire US government. Just my 2 cents worth...
