Restoring From Time Machine after Factory Reset

I'm about to do a factory reset on my iMac. Long story and no need to repeat here.

I'm reading the directions for restoring from a Time Machine BU and it appears I'll have the option of renaming the old account and having it available as another user on the Mac or using the same name and the old account will be deleted.

which is better?

Depends if you have enough room for the second user.
You say you did a factory reset--if you wiped everything, you wouldn't already have a user?

i think as it's restarting you designate a user and after that go to Migration Assistant to restore from Time Machine.

Turns out that decision needs to be on hold for a bit. Costco Concierge turned me over to Apple that is now having me go through two other troubleshooting steps before seeing if a factory reset is necessary. Annoying part is I need to wait three weeks or so between steps because that's about how long it takes after a reboot for the random restarts i've been experiencing tend to occur.

Today I updated Big Sur (don't know why the iMac was telling me there were software updates. my M1 MBA does) plus i reset the SMC and the NVRAM. and now i wait. the specialist will call me in 3 weeks to check in if i don't contact him first.

After 3 weeks, does it reboot once and it is good once again for 3 weeks, or then it starts to reboot often and it is not usable?

(sorry of I missed the previous threads or if I already asked there and I just don't recall)

Are you sure this is not a power issue? have you tried another circuit (even if you have to use an extension cord)? do you have a good UPS? Thanks

it reboots and is fine for about three weeks. a few days before it needs to reboot it does get slow and wonky. i use an app called Epoccam that has come to be my canary in a coal mine. when it stops working i know the problem is building up again. it stopped working a few days ago. the imac restarted itself this afternoon and i called Costco concierge.

who knows what the issue is. yes, it's plugged into a good UPS. nothing else plugged into that outlet has failed on me.

So if you restart every week, it is good then?

that might be an option and one i would take if not for still being covered by a Costco warranty. not dealing runs the risk it will worsen and eventually be on my dime.
