@#$%& for dogs <<-- and why is that word banned here?

I suppose you'll need to quote this post to read the "bad" word?

But it's not what you think. Hell, it's not even for a male dog.

Puppy troubles!

Some total ingrate (I love all of mankind, don't get me wrong) dumped a puppy in our yard one day, unbeknownst to us.

We have 4 other dogs who have free reign of the yard, so they soon figured out there was an interloper. She was beat and sickly when she showed up. Took her to the vet, who did not think she would survive. Nursed her back to some form of health while she stayed in a special protected spot behind the house so that the other dogs couldn't make her worse (or get them sick?)

As she got better a pattern had emerged; she couldn't keep anything down, not even water. Back to the vet, who said maybe her esophagus is messed up and not properly transporting stuff correctly? Everything else checked out. Her name is Beara, because she looks like a little Care Bear.

And so began the procedures and machinations to keep the pup upright while feeding, like a baby. Apparently some dogs never recover from this and need to eat from a high-chair, essentially. We have carrying bags and totes filled with things like towels or pool noodles to keep her upright, even a rolling computer bag was briefly used. And my wife has been watching her through all of this, with our son doing duty also.

But the situation isn't getting better, and so now they'll try the @#$%&, which isn't @#$%& (that's a trade name product) but the "medical" version of that because what it's supposed to do is help open up the bottom of the esophagus to let food and water pass better? She's getting some things, just not enough.

She was tested for aspiration and lucky isn't doing that. No food or water in her lungs. But if she keeps coughing up food and water, aspiration will eventually happen, along with resulting pneumonia. And then that'll be that. sad smiley

IIRC, my MIL had the C i a l i s drug prescribed for her for some really unusual reason, that obviously had nothing to do with what C is usually prescribed for.

deckeda,
So amazing that you are going through all this for the poor pup. Best of luck to all of you.

People that abandon animals are horrible people.

Deckeda is a good human. Good luck to all of you, Beara especially. I’m wondering, however, if there is a surgical intervention that she needs. That would be a worthy cause indeed.

FWIW, most of my “pets” over the last 40 years have been “lost” or abandoned. They make some of the best companions.

Edit: dammed autocorrect! (Twice!)

To get around the nanny filter, just highlight a single letter and change the color of it

Diana, I think that's what today's test was for, to determine what might be viable next? Not sure, but at this time I'm not aware that there's anything surgery can do.

Google "Bailey chair". There's even instructions for building one.

Yep we know about the "Bailey chair." Gonna see if the new medicine helps and probably change her feeding from 3 down to 2 times a day, with more protein.

So get back to work and sweat some more
The sun will sink, and we'll get out the door
It's no good for man to work in cages
Hits the town, he drinks his wages
You're frettin', you're sweatin'
But did you notice you ain't gettin'?
