They had those on the USS Puffer SSN-652. I was on board for 6 weeks in the summer of 1985 as a 1st year midshipman. Never fired one though.

They never touch the ship. The Mk48 explodes under the ship creating a hole in the water that breaks the ship's keel.

The pressure of water hit by a compressive force (ie: high explosives can move at supersonic speed) is awesome. As anyone who has done a belly flop can testify.
