.....'Uhura'......'Nurse Chapel'.....'Dr. M’Benga'........and a few other 'legacy' characters from the original......

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Reveals Its Uhura in First-Look Video

.....Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is gearing up for its maiden voyage — and it’s adding a familiar face to its crew.

A new teaser for the upcoming Trek prequel, which you can watch above, reveals that cast member Celia Rose Gooding will be playing Uhura, the iconic character played by Nichelle Nichols on the original Star Trek series. “I am thrilled and honored to say that I will be playing Cadet Nyota Uhura,” Gooding says in the video, adding: “I am so excited to be stepping into this legacy.”

The first-look video also introduces us to more cast members like Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga, both characters from the original Trek. Plus, we get a sneak peek at Ethan Peck reprising his Star Trek: Discovery role as Spock, now looking much more like Star Trek-era Spock with short bangs and a clean-shaven face.

Strange New Worlds, which earned a series order back in May 2020, follows a trio of Discovery alums — Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn’s Number One and Peck’s Spock — as they boldly go off on their own adventures. The spinoff is set during the years when Pike captained the U.S.S. Enterprise before James T. Kirk took the helm.

The announcement came as part of the annual Star Trek Day celebration, which brought lots of Star Trek news: We also learned that Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on Thursday, Nov. 18 and the animated kids’ show Star Trek: Prodigy will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 28, both on Paramount+.

legacy......characters.......?!

Someone pointed out that this takes place in 2258 and Kirk took command in 2265, so if Uhura is a Cadet in 2258 and has only made it to Lieutenant in 2268 (the end of ToS) she's either a bit of a screw up or Starfleet discriminates against female officers or both. She should have made it to Lieutenant Commander, at least.

Also, Nurse Chapel has not had much of a career arc, herself.

Harry Kim was a screw up. He played "nice guy," but was more frequently insubordinate than Tom Paris. His habit of going AWOL to meet women -- often picking up nasty diseases or otherwise endangering the ship in the process -- certainly should have set his career back a bit, regardless of his brilliance as an engineer and Operations officer. Plus, since he was a duplicate from an alternate dimension he really should have had no formal rank.

Perhaps Uhura is an unqualified, reckless duplicate. The new series has only just begun...

Or, just as in todays Navy, there are certain specialties that are over-populated with really good people, and getting promoted while staying in that specialty is difficult. "Sorry, Lt... there's five slots for LCDR Communication Specialists in all of Star Fleet, and we have 3,426 Lieutenants taking the exams for promotion... Your chances aren't good".

Dude! This should have been preceded by “Spoiler alert” for those of us (i.e. me) in the early stages of a Voyager marathon!

The show wrapped twenty years ago this last May... there's gotta be an expiration on Spoilers at SOME point!
Just keep watching... it gets better. winking smiley

There is another character with a familiar name as well. I have very low expectations for this one as well.

San Antonio, TX (in the old city)

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
“Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." - Eli Weisel

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"I don’t want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." - Billy Graham 1981

"Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise" - Barry Goldwater
