How long does dry ice stay viable?

Found a local place here in Bellflower, Ca that sells 5 lbs of dry ice.

If I need it on a Sunday, can I buy it on Saturday?

Need to keep 32 Ice Cream drum sticks, frozen for use at a picnic

How long does dry ice work if kept in ice chest?

Depends on how well insulated the ice chest is. Be very cautious: an ice chest full of dry ice in a closed room eventually makes the air in that room very toxic with CO2 gas. It can kill you.

Overnight shouldn't be a problem, ESPECIALLY if you do something to shield it from heat (ie styrofoam or other cooler, an insulated bag, even putting a blanket over it etc). Put your Ice Cream Drum Sticks in said cooler once you get the dry ice home. NOTE: you drumsticks WILL be frozen ROCK HARD. Also, DO NOT EVER handle dry ice with you BARE HANDS!!! Gloves are MANDATORY safety gear.

Well insulated, and kept in a tightly confined space, dry ice will last a long, long time.
The more space you give it, and the more access to heat it has, will shorten its usable lifespan.
Govern your treats and ice chest accordingly.....

and enjoy.

If it is in a small cooler that can fit inside a larger cooler, a REALLY long time. Or inside an insulated bag with the cones, and that inside a cooler. More insulation.

We have a 32 qt cooler that we nest in a 60 qt cooler when we store them.

Remember that as dry ice evaporates, it off-gases, and the gas will take more space than the solid ice. It can pressurize a sealed container, potentially causing it to pop or explode.

The chemistry teacher at my school blows up a 2-liter every year that way as a demonstration.

Store it in the garage if you can.

Overnight in a small cooler or box is a good plan. FYI distributors that sell solder paste or similar materials ship in boxes with dry ice for overnight delivery.

I played with dry ice a lot as a young'un and never considered that CO2 would be a problem.

It would probably take a lot of dry ice in a room fairly void of ventilation to become a real threat.

Getting 'burned' from careless handling would be far more likely.

There's a Safeway store that apparently sells dry ice.

I don't know how that works.

One probably has to bring their own container, as I don't see any near the big ice chest.

I handle food shipped in dry ice at work. I load the food into a chest freezer and toss the ice. One time I was quickly emptying boxes and some of the dry ice ended up in the freezer. I leaned into the freezer to move some things around and I immediately got light-headed--even that small amount was puddling in the freezer enough to displace the oxygen.

Boy, I must live dangerously. I've actually even put a pellet into my mouth for brief periods. Gives interesting results. grinning smiley
