I love the Spinners

Number 1 because they look like some dudes that walked out of the factory. They went home, got cleaned up. Put on some glad rags and went down to the club to rock the spot. The next day, they started the morning shift a little richer and a little hungover.

I may miss the subtleties (and hence be generalizing too much), but going backwards from them to the likes of the Temptations and such….man, good stuff! May even be before my time, but all that’s become a regular part of my music rotation.

I see screenplays in your writing.

Apologies to the anonymous forum member affected by my previous sig pic. It was my personal pic of a country expressing great grief as their leader, one of the most recognized people in the world, lay on his deathbed 8 years ago, days before he died. Like a naif, I did not realize it was offensively political, I considered it an expression of deep emotion and a reminder of the mortal coil's nature; that we all, great and small, can only hope to make a difference in our short time here, no matter the personal cost.

I'll post another pic from my work in South Africa that is, hopefully, apolitical.

One of the very earliest favorite songs I had was the duet the group did with Dionne Warwick, "Then Came You." Still a favorite to this day.

O'Jays @ Daryl's House
Daryl Hall - vocals, guitar, keyboards
The O'Jays (Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, Eric Nolan Grant) - vocals
Shane Theriot - guitar, musical director

I could not find a Spinners edition.
And no one dresses like that anymore.

If You have the time, these are great.

May I suggest you all give Tavares: Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel another listen? My BIL's uncles and really nice guys! Talented, too.

Men making great music instead of boys "trying to look hard" as depicted in later years of pop music.

Young kids today know these are old fogey songs but they'll be singing them for years after they've forgotten what's hot today. Melodies and timeless lyrics have a way of staying around like that, nevremind the suits and sync'd dancing.

Stupendous songs. I love that they've always had multiple lead vocalists and were just so smooth.

Also, notably, Stevie Wonder wrote and produced "It's a Shame."

Love all three of these songs! I can't help but sing along whenever "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel" comes up on the iPod or radio. And I've always preferred Tavares' version of "More Than A Woman" over the Bee Gees' version.

They sure don't make 'em like they used to...

It is what it is.

… the DEE-troit Spinners …

It's a Shame… (Paul Jackson, Jr's 2003 cover is noteworthy…)

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

great music.

I'll Be Around
Games People Play
Could It Be ...
Rubberband Man

Though they started in Detroit and Motown, their best stuff is with Thom Bells (and Gamble & Huff) Philadelphia sound.
The box set is a good start.

I love that story. Look at how organic the union of the Spinners and Hurtt and Thom Bell was. We're talking high school mates, early appreciation/admiration from the producer and the only potential flub was Atlantic putting the wrong single on the A side.
