Why Apple decided to only make expensive AppleTV streaming devices

A report says:

'...two longtime Apple marketing executives, Greg Joswiak and Phil Schiller... didn’t want Apple getting into the business of making cheap, low-margin devices, and they were concerned that putting Apple’s brand on them would tarnish its reputation for building premium products. In the end, Apple decided it was comfortable developing an app for Apple TV+ that worked on hardware products from Samsung, Roku, Amazon and others, even if they were relatively inexpensive.'

So no AppleTV 'stick' for you!

RIP iStick. Or AppleStick. Or PowerStick if you want to get retro. PowerStick Plus if you want a mishmash of retro.

Apple has famously (or infamously, if one wants to shake their brolly at the sky) avoided competing for the low end for the above reasons.

It's long been Apple mantra.

I think I'd be in for one as well.

Raspberry pi running Kodi could do it. Airplay support comes and goes with various versions but it works fine, when it works. Anything running Kodi can receive airplay.

Buy a $10 pic and do it

Any firetv stick can add third party to run airplay. Worked well until Amazon borked the firetv OS. I’ll have to see if they fixed it, was painfully slow to boot on the 4K and original Cube models in my house.

Yes, but a hdmi stick that could be powered by most tv USB ports would be much more convenient for travel.

Pretty sure the sub $50 Roku devices can run AirPlay & AppleTV.

Honestly, the cost of a "smart" TV is subsidized by manufacturers who almost certainly sell your data. You can beat them by buying a smart TV and NOT connecting to your wi-fi. An AppleTV box will protect your privacy for a relatively small amount.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"I don’t want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." - Billy Graham 1981

"Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise" - Barry Goldwater

But it’s a PItA to use for travel and other scenarios.

Honestly, I’d pay a premium for an appletv ‘stick’ - $99 would make sense as it’s double the price of Roku or Amazon.

Wouldn’t an older version AppleTV 2nd/3rd Gen work for airplay (cheaply)?

For those of us that were traveling a lot, we try to travel light and as compact as possible. An Airplay stick would be perfect. Other devices work, but aren’t perfect or are bigger and heavier.
