12.0 Monterey. Anyone?

Got the update notice for beta testers. Not sure I should do it, as my son uses this M1 mini for school, and I can't afford to troubleshoot if something gets borked. Anyone jumping in?

Monterey Jack woke up in his shack on a Monday
Monterey Jack had a little bitty snack of some elderberry wine
Monterey Jack walked down the track, all the way to ol' Harley's shack
Stuck his knife in ol' Harley's back
And they say that's the way ol' Harley Davison died

Fundamental rule of IT: Don't install or test beta software on mission-critical hardware.

Sounds like this applies to your situation.

It is what it is.

Don't break what's not broken in a mission critical work flow. 10.12.6 is still widely used in video production within a few firms cause it does what they need and all is working as then need it too. You only upgrade OS versions when a requirement is there that affects your workflow / operational requirements.

Otherwise - if all is running well, just creating extra work when doing a new, major OS version. Even on dot revisions, good to let dust settle if you can before updating.

Vs. OS 12 is not even in release candidate versioning yet... It's something to mess with if you have time to do so and understand stuff might break.

I don't understand posts like this. Are you looking for affirmation for a decision you've already made?

I'm on Big Sur on my M1 MBA only because that's what it shipped with.

But I'll do Monterey when it ships.

Betas are not for me.

Getting out of the betasphere is just two tedious for me.

But if I were going to do that, it would be an an external drive.

What's up with this? We've had OS 10 for a few years, we get 11 for a few months, and now 12? Why 12 already?

I'm on 10.14.6 as I have too many apps that wouldn't work with Catalina or Big Sur, and will stay here at 10.14.6 as long as I can...

Don't do it. That Mac is the daily driver. Beta Ones should never be installed on the primary computer.

That said, I am testing the public Monterey beta on one of my several Macs (M1 mini, M1 iMac & 2 Intel Macs) because I have these other Macs to fall back on. It is very difficult to create a bootable backup clone in Monterey. You have to jump through too many hoops and there is no guarantee that that clone will remain bootable with the next beta update. Monterey security has been stepped up a notch from prior OSes, continuing the pattern established.

My only significant problem is with network printing. I never know if I am going to delete and re-add the printer in order to print on a daily basis. I don't know if this is my particular OS installation or something flaky in Monterey beta. I don't do much beyond email and browsing and banking. Retirement is wonderful as long as you can remain mobile.
