If you wanted a slightly better iPhone than an 8?
Posted by: bazookaman

Wife needs a new phone. Daughter has an 8. I have an 8. I figured I'd get her an 8. I think she has a 7 now. Definitely going used. But let's say I could spend a couple more dollars and get...what? I'm not springing for a 12. But what's the next decent phone after the 8? I really lost all track after they switched their naming convention.

Isn't the latest generation iPhone SE pretty much exactly "a slightly better iPhone than an 8". iPhone 8 case with newer guts.

I hadn't realized that but it would appear to be. I was poking around and made that discovery just now.

This ^^. 2020SE

IF your goal is to really upgrade her -- iPhone 11. Longest battery, face ID, fast, dual cameras.

Sadly, you kinda missed last year, when most carriers were trade-in value on an 8 would have got you $700 towards a 12.

No idea if they will do the same this year.

FWIW, I bought an 8 off gazelle last year, in "good" condition... it was immaculate. Id buy again.

XR that’s what I’ve been sporting. I completely skipped 8. Wife has iPhone 12.

iPhone 7, 8 and SE (2020) are the exact same dimensions. They all use the same aftermarket cases. It's kind of handy to have the whole family using the same iPhone cases and peripherals.

Xr is fine, but 11 is *much* better phone -- worth the extra few bucks.

dual cameras, normal + wide (including night mode), longer battery and big step up in the processor.

I am still using an X. It was a big upgrade from my 6+.

Bazooka,

I'll take JDC's recommendation a step further. Looked for a used iPhone Pro. It superior to the iPhone 11 in many ways but is noticeably smaller. Its battery life isn't quite as good as an 11 (regular) but the other benefits of the 11 Pro more than outweigh the difference. It's one of the reasons I have an 11 Pro instead of an 11.

Agreed -- 11 Pro is a good phone, no doubt. As a small phone person (I currently have a 12 mini, upgraded from an iPhone SE (5)) it would be something I would have shopped for.

But in practical use, the Pro only has 2 extra factors -- sharper OLED screen and 3rd camera.

Processors are identical, normal 11 still has the longer battery -- and the Pro stills seems to command a premium $$ last time I looked -- so the normal 11 still gets my vote (unless you can find a deal on an 11 Pro)

My daughter sports an 8+, she likes the touchID amidst mask-wearing, and it takes good photos.

However, I think the camera different in the 11 series and 12 is worth every penny Apple charges. I moved from the X (basically the camera in the 8) to an 11Pro+. That was amazing upgrade.

I think 11Pro and 12 are about the same (12Pro is a bump above either).

A number of posts have raved about the 11 battery. I bought my 11 in November 2019. Battery life/health is at 83%. I don't get it. I still have my son's X in the house. It's battery life/health is 82% even though it's four years old.

though i refer to my 11 often it's just checking email, news, or facebook or listening to podcasts. i don't stream on much video. why is my battery down so much? I'd not recommend the 11 for anyone because of this.

If you want small, the 12 Mini is slightly smaller than the 7/8/SE, but with a bigger screen.

If you want the SE, hold off for a month if you can. There MIGHT be a new SE introduced, making the current SE even cheaper.

Mostly we are referring to hours of run time, as opposed to lifetime battery health. Could be a myriad of factors, but every last review, test, youtube video, etc showed the 11 battery lasted longer than any other iPhone.

How you use your phone (email vs video) is prob irrelevant... battery goes down in either case, just at different intervals....

This is merely anecdotal, and I'm almost always in agreement with Robert M and JDC, but the battery life on my 11 Pro absolutely DESTROYS that of the 3 standard iPhone 11s we have in our house. Maybe it's due to work from home, or maybe I've developed otherworldly battery management skills, but for our family it's not even close. The battery on the 11 is much better than earlier phones, but my 11 Pro seems to be in a whole different league.

It's almost 2 years old, and I think it has completely died on me once or twice. The one time I recall was when we were on a long trip, and I was driving with GPS and allowing other family members to plug into power. I do typically use Qi charging sporadically throughout the day, but I often don't even bother charging overnight. I rarely even have to think about it. Meanwhile, my other family members always seem to be worrying about plugging in, carrying an external power brick, etc.

I just point this out because this was an unexpected benefit. Maybe I'm lucky, but to me this is the biggest differentiator between my phone and the other phones in our household.

Thanks for all the input. I got her an SE. So just a little upgrade. I didn't want to spend too much more. Ideally I wanted to wait until work upgraded MY 8, then I could get that one and give it to her. But I don't know when that will happen as I don't tend to plow through company phones like some people. Plus I don't think I could have waited much longer as her phone is quickly going down the tubes.

well you could have waited until 10 am PST today when the new iPhone 13s were announced... maybe the SE would get updated or discounted...

He's still in the return Window for that SE if a much better deal is announced today. I would suggest not taking it out of the box until a couple of hours from now.

Same time every year, for the last 13 years =)

IMHO, iPhone 11 @ $499 is worth the extra $100 over the SE, every day and twice on Sunday. Its an overall better iPhone experience in every way.
