Update your iPhone: Spyware company using 'terrifying' hack, researchers say

A cybersecurity lab found a new exploit on a Saudi dissident's phone from a well-known spyware company that has spurred Apple to push an urgent software update.

Saw this on the news.
My phone had not auto updated, but it was there when I checked for updates.

I updated my 'Phone and Watch, and will do my M1 MBA in a bit.

Some of my gear is probably too old to get this from Apple.

I've got a couple of other Macs and some iPads that I'll have to get to.

If you read articles from other mac based sites... its not that quite doom and gloom.

Yeah, it looks like it would be pretty specialized, but the fact that you don’t have to click a link or anything makes it worse than most of these things.

Been on national news. Updated mine and wife’s iPhone 12’s and my older mabook running Catalina, watch currently doesn’t say it needs update , maybe because it is series 1.

PSA: It's quite possible Apple will release iOS 15 sometime this week. If, like me, you plan to avoid it, you will have limited time in which to upgrade to the latest version of iOS 14.x.

I upgraded both my iOS devices this evening. If Apple releases any other iOS 14.x upgrades prior to releasing iOS 15, those will also be first-day upgrades for me.

TL;DR: Don't dally in upgrading to the latest iOS 14 if you do not intend to install iOS 15.

It is what it is.

So, my understanding is that this potentially affects Macs too, right?

It looks like no security updates for anything before Big Sur. My wife has always been "please don't "update" me; everything is working fine now and I'm happy with it", so her early 2014 MBA is running Sierra (10.12.6).

Anything to do?

I thought I saw something about a security update for Catalina.

You're right - Big Sur, Catalina, and one other. I had my order-of-release mixed up.

But no Sierra. No 10.x.x anything, I think. Maybe that means it's not affected?

Catalina is macOS 10.15.x.

No security update for Sierra 10.12.6 or Safari 12.1.12.

I don't assume that neither is at risk, but they they're unsupported.

I'll have to check, but it's probably the same with High Sierra and its Safari version.
