Apple silicon design changes slowing down?

The iP13 CPU (A15) seems to be the same speed as the prior A14.

And the Apple Watch Series 7 literally uses the same processor as the Series 6:

My take: Apple has lost some top talent to a couple new startups, and the rest have spent time on the M1 and M1X chips.

Also, not surprising that the Watch uses the same specialty chip for more than a couple years. It's not exactly 'slow'.

But the A15 not being really faster than the A14 IS surprising to me!

I've yet to dive into some tech white papers on the chips, but perhaps increasing speed wasn't the top priority of the A15 over the A14 (energy conservation/battery life come to mind as a key factor).

this. the iPhone 12 isn't exactly "slow" either. Neither was the 11. =)

Im guessing in a couple of years the phones get an M1, like the current iPPs

Perhaps. When your speed lead is so large, you can slow down and focus on other parameters like battery life.

If true, I fully approve - though my battery life in our iP12Pro models has not been an issue at all.

There is more than just speed. Plenty of other facets of chip design to focus on.

I’ve been around long enough to have heard this from Motorola during the G4 series chips, and Intel this last 5 years…

Lower power usage means less heat is generated, which means that a CPU does not have to be throttled, which translates into higher average clock speeds.

Also, the 13's ALL have longer battery life than their predecessors, possibly due in part due more efficient processors!

I will await actual tests, e.g. anandtech.com.
