I hope y'all have experienced a giant Sequoia because many of them are being threatened by fire

A couple of new fires are growing and looking like they are gonna merge then take aim at MANY of the giant sequoia groves in Sequoia National park. Pictures do not do justice - these things are unimaginably HUGE!

(luckily, this one is in Yosemite and isn't now threatened)
(PS, I just realized that this is a pic of Pres Roosevelt with John Muir - if you never read about their adventure in Yosemite, you should...)

General Sherman (the biggest living thing on earth) has been wrapped in preparation. I expect a lot more wrap as the threat gets closer.

3000 years old, gone in an hour. They are built to withstand, indeed thrive after, ordinary forest fire, but these massive burns are not ordinary. They get way too hot.

Those foil wraps have proven successful, they've already saved a dozen or so homes that would have burned to the ground. Not sure what the structural integrity of those houses look like after enduring that sort of intense heat.

Bummer. I remember as a kid seeing the pictures of a car driving through one of them and always hoped I'd get to see one in person. I still may, but...

The bark on those things is so weird - you can hold a lighter to it all day and it won't burn.

that tree collapsed years ago - probably because someone cut a big hole in it...

They say now the fires are so much hotter that they're taking them out. That's one of my favorite parks. I'm very anxious about it.

I know our firefighters are going to put their typical Herculean effort and fight hard to protect our resources. It's unbelievable.

I think this is a bit of a misunderstanding. The seeds require fire to get the germination started, but super hot fires just burn up the seeds and that is a big danger to the species. I'm not all that worried about the trees actually burning - at least not the ones like Gen Sherman that are in very well 'raked' forests with roads that allow FFs to get there and defend with everything they got. Fingers crossed...

Just saw them in July. And I watched Paul F eat. Not sure which was more awe-inspiring

BTW, Sequoia bark is naturally fire-resistant and the trees normally wouldn't normally catch fire anywhere that's dangerous. However over 100 years of suppression of natural forest fires has allowed the surrounding firs and pines to grow tall enough (instead of being burned dead) that now those trees will allow any fire to spread all the way up to the canopies of the Sequoias and burn their leaves and branches, thus killing them off once and for all.

If ANY trees will survive such a fire, these are them.

Let's hope the rain we're supposed to get up here tomorrow extends far enough to get things at least damp down that way.

I've never seen the big ones but I planted a small one in my yard last spring. Only 4' tall but it seems to be doing well here on the coast.

Spent quite a bit of time in the Mineral King valley and over to Big Arroyo -->Kern River.

There are two small Sequoia groves as you drive the 25 mile one-lane road into Mineral King.

The fire is close. Three Rivers (where the road to Mineral King starts/ends) is evacuated right now.

There should be a new picture facing Farewell Gap (to the south of the valley) tomorrow. The camera facing north (towards Timber Gap) takes pictures more frequently and shows quite a bit of smoke.

here's a really good overview of where things stand right now.

This guy discussed the fire while hovering over a fancy google earth screen that includes the areas where the giant sequoia groves are at and also points out areas of prescribed burning in the last five years and last 10 years (anything beyond 10 is considered too old to be of help).

The good news is that the area surrounding the big groves has seen many prescribed burns in the last 5 & 10 years. I feel pretty sure the Sherman is safe. THey should be able to defend that area...

This area had very severe winds just a little bit over a year ago that knocked down many of the unnamed trees. Luckily the older, larger trees were unscathed. Part of the problem, is that there is a lot of fuel for these fires because of those previously downed trees.
It was a year ago next month, that I visited Sequoia, while other fires were burning nearby but not in that close proximity.
As a young child, I remember driving through one of those cut out trees. A lifelong memory!
