1Password questions

I'm getting ready to buy a new iPhone, and one of the apps on my current iPhone is 1Password. It's the older version (v6.something). Here's the thing though. The way I use it is that I only use the vault, or "Secure Notes" feature. I have something like 165 "secure notes", each with the name of a website and my login and password. I don't have the app on my Mac. Many times I use it when I'm on my work PC, upon which I cannot install any apps. I just pull it up, click on the entry for a website, and type in my login/password. I'm happy with using it that way.

From what I'm reading, v7 (currently the latest version) is a paid upgrade, and requires a monthly subscription. I see online where it talks about a standalone version, but apparently not for iOS. This is from an Agile Bits employee on their website: "1Password for iOS can be used with a membership, or it can be used as a companion app to 1Password for Mac / 1Password for Windows. It cannot be used in "standalone mode" on its own, without Mac or Windows."

I just want an app on the phone that securely holds my logins/passwords and doesn't require a subscription. I don't want or need to sync it with anything. I don't use iCloud for anything. Anybody got any suggestions?

Im not sure the question... but I only have v6 -- use it on my iPhone 12 all the time.

I would assume the phone model is irrelevant, its the iOS? V6 seems to work fine with iOS14.

Ah, the obfuscation of 1Password. It pisses me off every time I have to do a forced upgrade and need to go searching for the impossible-to-find standalone version, which changes every year.

I currently have version 7 on both my M1 Mini and my 6S iPhone from the 1800s. Standalone versions, will never do the "pay us money every month until you die." But I'd be hardpressed to remember how I found the standalone versions.

I keep swearing I'm going to switch to some other password app that syncs...

I love the 1Password perpetual license product, but I hate how they are handling their conversation to ‘SAS’. Sorry, I’ve purchased nearly all paid versions to date for Mac and iOS. I should have an option IN THE MAC APP STORE to keep using my purchased product. Not have to install OVER that app install etc.

Sorry, I’m not going to ‘convert’ and NOW pay monthly.

If you want a long-time customer to change business model, then first - support what you sold me already. Then give me a real financial offer like three years free. Last time I checked it was like 50% off for one year. Nope, I’ll maintain my cloud syncing via Dropbox for another couple years.

I haven't tried it, but Bitwarden looks like it might do the trick.

Actually - I think I'll give them a testdrive; I'm getting tired of paying an annual fee for my password storage as well (I'm a longtime SplashID user - but they, too, moved to the subscription model awhile back)

IM dreading the day Im forced to upgrade to 7.

Subscriptions -- hell, our whole life revolves around "subscriptions" (cell phone, net, car, electricity, insurance, gas, taxes, etc) so that bothers me less.

But the way I use 6, mostly the "mini" version in my menubar -- the 7 interface has effed it up beyond all belief. Takes multiple steps to do one, and its 3 times the size.

Well, if V6 still works with iOS 15, then I'll just keep using it. I have no desire to update, although I'm sure at some point I may have to. I'm actually planning on keeping my 6s, because it's running iOS 10, and there's a game I play all the time that never got updated to work under iOS 11. So at the worst, I would just drag it out when I need to remember a password. But I'll look into Bitwarden.

Yup to all this. I subscribed to 7 a couple of years ago and each update makes me more furious. The simple interface and ease of use is gone. In a recent interaction with their customer service I told them 1Password was turning in Microsoft Word. I pleaded that they should fire their engineers before they add more features no one wants.

The latest is that pages with a fill in box (say, for a zip code) all trigger 1 Password login offers. Even if it has nothing to do with login. Their customer service person said that all web page designers should change their coding to fit 1Password's requirements.

As Dave Barry would say, 'I am not making this up.'

The arrogance about how they are so customer oriented is vomit inducing.

Do let's have a forum hunt for the equivalent of 1Password 6.

Does anyone know Dave’s private email address? I’d like to write him and include a link to this thread.

He had a good product but greed killed the product.

Shame.

Why get bent out of shape over 1Password? Sure, they screwed the pooch, but it's not as though they are the only game in town. There are plenty of other password managers out there, some arguably better than 1Password. Just google password manager reviews.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. Because they were always David vs Goliath. Now, they are acting like the 800lb gorilla.

There are 100 better ways for them to do the conversion, starting with being upfront with customers.

Instead, they are using the Adobe playbook.

I was hoping they would be better.

V6 works fine on my iPhone running iOS15 Release candidate.

But yeah Bitwarden is a pretty good free alternative.

This. I totally regret upgrading to v7, even the perpetual version.

Not to mention that it failed to import all my entries from my v6 vault.

It is what it is.

Come work with me, my company provides 1Password family membership as a perk in addition to the corporate plan.

For some reason, I love this. Even if your company is paying full retail, this a perk that costs them $60/year while encouraging good password hygiene. Benefits them WAAAAYYY more than the investment, and it's a good perk for you. Even if you have a zillion other reasons to be dissatisfied with your employer, this is a sign that they are forward-thinking.

My workplace also used to provide 1Password for free. However, a couple of years ago they switched over to LastPass. There are a lot of companies that offer this perk.

I dreaded updating 1Password to the subscription model. But I did. And now it works fine and I don't think about it.

1Password made the change-over more difficult by the obscure PR-related language they couched it in. I complained. They didn't see the problem. Oh, well, it works well.
