My partner's dad was part of the recovery teams for the Mercury missions. His C-119 was patrolling an area in case they went off course. They were to push out life rafts and supplies until the ships got there.

He also did SAR in 'nam. Those he would NOT talk about.

They're doing the outside inspections for explosive safeing and hypergolic leak checks... They should be getting the recovery ship up close and winch the capsule aboard over the next hour.
