Too big to fail, or will they get bailed out?

Evergrande is not the problem, it is a symptom of a much larger property speculation problem in China which will have to sort itself out at the cost of the lifetime assets of many, many families who cannot afford to lose their investments but will.

I was visiting China in May 2016, and the over build of real estate was already very apparent. There were huge skyscrapers of apartments in many towns they were completely empty. This has been a long time coming, and it was pretty obvious.

There are entire cities that have been built with no residents. They have roads, sewage, power...but no citizens. They're ghost cities.

Before you declare China's strategy wrong, keep in mind there are hundreds of successes for every negative you cite. The scale of change in a country of over 1 billion people is really hard for most to grasp.

At the same time, the size and scope of the Evergrande crash seems like a bubble bursting moment. We will see whether China just lets the conglomerate fail as an example to others.
