I know this should be easy, but for some reason I am struggling. Trying to find the cost basis for some of my stock.

Apple's shareholder information Investor Relations site should have the complete history of APPL stock prices.

I assume that's a split adjusted price ($0.24), and probably what stephen needs if calculating profit/loss (as opposed to idle curiosity what it was back then - in which case, one might want the actual dollar amount it was trading at on that day).

Apple
What was the offering price at Apple’s initial public offering (IPO)?
Apple went public on December 12, 1980 at $22.00 per share. The stock has split five times since the IPO, so on a split-adjusted basis the IPO share price was $.10.

How many times has Apple’s stock split?
Apple’s stock has split five times since the company went public. The stock split on a 4-for-1 basis on August 28, 2020, a 7-for-1 basis on June 9, 2014, and split on a 2-for-1 basis on February 28, 2005, June 21, 2000, and June 16, 1987.

So for the idle curiosity, the actual dollar amount on 3/5/96 would be roughly $26.88 ($0.24 x 4 x 7 x 2 x 2 - there's probably some rounding off that happened in that $0.24 number, so that's lost in getting back to the original number). (Again, this is only useful for idle curiosity).

Actual trading prices on 3/5/1996 (not adjusted for splits).

Close 26.625, High 26.75, Low 26.25

This was back when prices were in fractions (eg. 5/8).

Are we sure stephen isn’t just trying to rub our faces in it?

For that he would have picked the date 12/23/97 when it was about half that price (and no splits occurred in between).

Close $12.9375 High $13.3125, Low $12.9375

Split adjusted that's $0.115513393

That wasn't the "big" lot of my stock. : )

It was one share that has multiplied through the years.

As long as we’re into nose-rubbing, I bought 100 shares of AAPL within a few weeks of its 1997 low. I had about $1500 in. After tripling my money in about a year, I was feeling really smug about how smart I was and I sold my shares, plowing the proceeds into a shiny new Mac G3/300. I called it my “free Mac” while I used it, and got about 8 years out of it.

I don’t remember the exact dates of my buy or sell, but on a split-adjusted basis, AAPL in 1997 seems to have traded between 8-12 cents a share in today’s prices. At today’s share price of about $146.50, that’s between 1200-1800x return from my purchase point. My $1500 would be worth $1.8-2.7M.

So that was in fact the most expensive Mac I ever bought.

More power to anyone who had the chutzpah to hold on this long. My advice to anyone now is not to sell appreciated stocks you like beyond what you paid for them, to “lock in” at least a breakeven scenario in your mind.

Yeah, if I had just held on to all my shares from back in the day, it’d be worth seven, maybe eight digits. But somewhere around the turn of the millennium, well before the iPhone or iPad, AAPL took another one of it’s famous swoons, and I was looking at my self-directed Keogh and realizing at this rate, I would never get to retire. So I sold most of it.

Fortunately, around that time I had bought a much smaller amount outside of retirement that I just kinda almost forgotten about. And I’m glad I did.
