Dual booting Mojave & Big Sur: any advice?

I'm running Mojave on a 2015 MBP very happily (yes, I'm a Luddite), but one of the family members that I do tech support for is getting a new Mac, so I'm gonna need to be familiar with a newer Mac OS. I was thinking of backing up (of course), partitioning my internal SSD (1TB, with ~400 GB used for Mojave), and following the instructions on these pages to set up a fresh install of Big Sur that I can boot into and dabble with.

I'd be glad to get any other advice, warnings, or things to consider. I know that Mojave will soon fall off the update list, and I'll eventually be glad to have upgraded, but between a few 32-bit apps that I like and a fondness for iTunes, I'm not ready to move my system to it completely just yet.

Why not just get an external speedy drive and use that as your Big Sur boot?

…which is one of the reasons one shouldn't be a luddite.

meh, basics are the same.

if you are lucky, you will never have to trouble shoot anything for them.

As a self-professed luddite, partitioning shouldn't really be a word in your vocabulary, cause 99 times out of 100 its just leads to more pain than its worth.

Same rec as johnny, get a $40 external 500 GB SSD. easy.

Speaking of external SSDs, there's a Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA SSD at Amazon for $82.
