Smart watch market penetration

Here we are, roughly six years after AAPL introduced their watch. From what I understand, market penetration is something like 11% for smart watches. What was market penetration like for smart phones six years after the original iPhone?

It's a paradigm shift. People think of watches as something that tells time, maybe the date. In a few instances it might also have a stop watch or show moon phases. It's something that you buy and keep for decades.

Smart watches are devices that do many things and tell time, as well as all those other things people expect from a watch...but it only lasts 3-5 years.

11% is amazingly high for what I perceive to be a niche use case. The ergonomics of an extremely small screen simply prevent a lot of things being done easily on a watch vs. even a phone screen. There's a reason that phone screens are 6+ inches across.

I don't think it's topped out yet. I had no idea how useful the applewatch could be until I'd had it for a while. I would like to get a cellular one because I am thinking at this point it would be even more better. I know a lot of people for whom this is just beginning to dawn on them.

you mean like how we used to think a phone was only for making voice calls.

Yeah, it seems like you would need to have "young eyes" to like a smart watch. I even have to put my glasses on to use my phone.

AMEN!

Back in the "Casio days" I got FAR more use of the various Data Bank models. They were MUCH more user friendly.

I see Apple Watches all the time.

I think I've seen one Samsung watch.

They are nice looking, and I wish Apple also would make a round version.

I don't care that it's not as efficient for reading text.

Not an either/or situation.

I agree. I think a round watch looks nicer, and turning knobs is even in Apple iPod DNA.

I also think it’s a mistake to think a ‘watch’ is only a screen. My pebble was also good set of buttons, and haptic feedback. And voice calls like Dick Tracey is also quite delightful if I’m in a private area and do not annoy others. I absolutely have to use my readers to see nearly all but the biggest font on my watch. Stop making the tiniest screen be visual-only.

Free,

Smart watches and fitness bands are going to continue to become commonplace. I had an Apple Watch Series 1. Used it for a while. Got annoyed that it didn't like going into the shower and had to be charged each night. It had replaced a Garmin Vivofit that didn't care if it got soaked and didn't need constant charging. Just replace the batteries once a year or so. Once I got frustrated enough with the Apple Watch, I stopped using it.

Recently, one of my brothers gave me an Amazfit Band 2. Like it quite a bit. Doesn't care if it gets soaked from showers or giving Little M a bath. Charge it once every couple of weeks. My only complaint is that it's tough to find a watch face that offers 12 hour time. Aside from that, it's solid. And, if it breaks, I can replace it with a new model since they're cheap, i.e. $35 or so.

Here's a link to the newest version:

[us.amazfit.com]

I wish Apple would sell an equivalent to the Amazfit fitness band. Call it an Apple Watch Fit. Make it similar in size to the Amazfit Band or the Garmin Vivofit. Scale back some of the features since it should compete with fitness bands instead of full scale smart watches. Make it waterproof and not require charging for two weeks to a month. Price it appropriately though likely it'd be more expensive (but not too expensive) than its competitors since it'll be an Apple product and should be a step above its competitors in both form, function, features and build quality.

Robert

Text readability is a deal breaker for me. I've been absolutely fine with my 40mm AW4 with a few adjustments to text size and contrast.

Robert M, my watch is fine with water though I am mindful of which band i'm wearing when i shower or do dishes. I guess a lot has changed since the 2015 Apple Watch 1. Charging every night is not an issue as i do not understand how/folks want to have a device on while sleeping.

Graylocks,

My Amazfit monitors my sleep (and my heart rate while sleeping). For some, especially those with issues like sleep apnea, it's an important feature.

Robert

for those with sleep apnea it makes sense to me. but it seems a whole lot of people are monitoring their sleep without serious health particulars and for me that doesn't outweigh the weirdness (to me) of having a device on my wrist in bed. I've monitored my sleep with Sleep Cycle for almost 10 years now. it does it from my iphone on my bedside. that's enough info for me and i primarily use it because it dramatically changed and improved how I wake up not how i sleep.

I wear mine most nights just because I don't take it off. It causes me pain occasionally. For a while it was telling my heart rate was below 40, and I was concerned, but found that it happens during the day too, so I'm a little less concerned. It would be good to have the o2 sensor to make sure my sats aren't low when sleeping.

My favorite use for an Apple Watch is as a biometric trigger for Mac login or 2FA.

I also use it for opening my August smart locks so I now no longer carry keys.
