Retirement for real this time
Posted by: Ombligo
Date: September 28, 2021 07:02PM
Twelve years ago I retired from The Times. I became bored, so I went back to school and became a teacher.

Today I gave my notice and my last day at the school will be October 15. I'll now be my Mother's primary caretaker, a job infinitely more rewarding and frightening at the same time. She is 101 years old, so I don't expect I'll be employed long enough to be vested in this pension plan, but I'm okay with it.

No more pencils
No more books
No more Covid ignorance
Out for summer
Out till fall
I will not come
Back at all
School's out forever

Great! That means you'll have enough lead time to train for your Olympic trials.
(glad to see you're keeping up your usual pace)

Do you get an Apple Watch for the second retirement?

Take good care of mom.

I was wondering about that, too. Didn’t you sign a one year (or 9 or 10 month) contract before the beginning of the term?

No, I have never signed a contract in my 11 years with the school. my current position was actually paid through a state grant as I was a test administrator. My wife has been with the district for 28 years and also has never signed one. We have had three teachers resign in the last month, one for health reasons and the other two are going to other schools. I have never heard of a teacher in our district being held the "the contract."

Nah, just "youngest" looking 100+ y.o. lady I found on the interwebs. While MaBuzz is similar vintage as yours, she opted out of vascular surgery in 2001/'02 and didn't make it thru the summer of 2004. Docs said surgery would either fix her, or kill her, and that the odds of her ending up as (more of a) veggie, were minuscule. Alas, she opted out of getting her blood vessels roto-rootered, and hung in there for another two and a half years.... otherwise she'd be playing bridge, and golf w/ your wonderful mom. Congrats again on being able to enjoy her.
