So - I retired today...
Posted by: SDGuy
Date: September 29, 2021 08:09PM
I wasn't planning to stop working until the end of the calendar year, but they offered Early Retirement, as well as an incentive payment as long as you retired by September 29th.

The offer was finalized about a month ago, but it really didn't feel real until today, when I went back into the office one last time to do some turnover to my backfills, and turn in the laptop and ID Badges.

This feels bittersweet - the Program I was on is in the middle of some big upgrades, with lots of work to be done (and not enough staff - I'm not the only senior person to have left this year) - but I also feel like I've done more than my share for the Navy over the past 32.5 years; it's time to let the next generation of Engineers shine a bit (and besides, I've started feeling a bit obsolete sometime during the past two years or so).

So - a word of warning - I'm going to have more free time, so you might have to endure more tidbits (or possibly ravings) from me : )

Technology was in rapid change when I left the school system 11 years ago. I was deep into Excel spreadsheets which were pretty much stored on my hard drive. That model would not have been tenable had I stayed another year.

That plus age plus years of service all came together to make it clear that my time was done there.
Now, I sleep as long as I want (well, as long as the dog wants), do pretty much what I want, and they send me a check every month. Pretty neat, methinks!

Oh, yeah! Congratulations!

Welcome to the club.

Now do your wife a favor and find a cheap hobby to keep out of her way. My wife already threatened me when I told I was retiring last week.

You may find you have less time than when you were working.

Congratulations SDGuy! Enjoy your new role in life - retiree! I entered the "ranks" of the retired over 25

years ago and have only looked back with a sense of relief and thanksgiving!

You sound like a conscientious individual if you're worried about the "left behinds" and their bigger burden

of responsibilities now that you've moved on. You'll probably worry about their abilities to "carry on".

THEY WILL!!

I think almost every retiree experiences that same sort of worry or misgiving when leaving behind a position of responsibility.

YOU'VE UNDOUBTEDLY EARNED YOUR RETIREMENT. ENJOY IT! FOR A LONG TIME!

That bittersweet feeling should pass soon. What have you been wanting to do that work prevented? I “pulled the plug” a decade and a half ago (after 32+ years) and have ZERO regrets. Wild horses could NOT drag me back. There’s always a variety of good causes you can help with if you just want to get out of the house. I sold my house in 2018 (after owning it for 36 years). The ONLY things I miss are the whirlpool tub & deluxe shower (RV’s have small showers). SO much to see, do & explore across America (once it’s safe to resume RV travel again).

CONGRATULATIONS! I expect you’ll find retired life only requires small changes. boink smiley

Congratulations! I wish you good health and happiness in your retirement!

I am dreaming of the day I can retire. Definitely at least 10 years away, maybe 13. I have enough hobbies that take up lots of time and not a lot of money. Metal and wood working. Motorcycle repair. Computer troubleshooting. Throw in a daily walk and a daily nap and decent health…I’m set.

Yes, it is absolutely the truth! Although right now my hardest job is keeping my wife from retiring, something she will do in spite of my efforts this Dec. 31.

Congrats! I am semi-retired; I'm no longer seeking work but I will take it if offered. In fact, as said by a few of the previous posts, I'm busier now!

Busier now because I've been tasked with producing videos for the museum we're getting going in my town and I'm into a whole new learning curve!

Shameless plug: pontiactransportationmuseum.org. Go to the banner and find the PTM YouTube link for some of my very amateur work. I was told it didn't need to be Hollywood, but I'd like to think I'm improving as this progresses...

But enough of me-sorry! Enjoy your retirement and may it be a long and healthy one...

Well - some of my spare time will be both a hobby, and will require paying attention to the car's condition (and I think will have modelamac's stamp of approval):

but, yeah, I definitely think some domestic roadtrips will be in the immediate future (as long as COVID is still playing havoc with International Travel)

Point Loma, in the various R&D labs that NAVWAR has scattered throughout there.
It was a good run...and some of those jobs came with great office views - my car's the white Del Sol off by itself in the lower parking lot in this picture

Congrats! I managed to (semi) retire young from my day job back in 2007. 49 years old with 30+ years seniority. I still own and operate a mini storage biz on the side, but I have that set up so it mostly runs on its own.

One bit of advice, give yourself some time to decompress for awhile. No need to rush right into retirement. Ease into it slowly.

And those other posters are right. You will seem to have LESS free time after retirement! smiley-laughing001
