Went to top off at Sam's club this morning and there was a long line. I got right through because my fill is on the passenger side, and it seems that most cars had it on the driver's side.

Historically most cars would fill up on the passenger side as in the past that side would be nearest the roadside pumps. With cars being produced all over the world for different markets that gets blurred as it is not just us in the UK who drive on the left side of the road. Manufacturers will swap the steering wheel over but leave the fuel cap as it is. Japan drives on the left so usually they put the cap on the left side which for them and us means the passenger side but for most of the rest of the world it means the driver's side.

Passenger (USA) side.

Occasionally, I drive a car with driver side fill up, so I'm the idiot pulling into the wrong side of the pumps when I drive that.

Chevy Volt: Passenger side rear. Plug for electric is driver side front.

only used the gas port 3 times in the last 12 months. September 2020. March 2021. June 2021. Probably have driven about 6000 miles. I have to go to nashville in December so I'll put more in then.

Heh! My brother had one, and while riding with his wife, she asked if I could pump some gas for her. As a newly driving teenager, I was glad to do it. I looked for several minutes before asking where the heck the spout was located!

Also, had a loaner from the dealer once. I stopped for gas and while the gas tank door was visible from the drivers side, I couldn't figure out how to open it. I had to dig out the owners manual to find that there's a lever on the floor under the seat that released the locking latch to refuel. I never would have found it on my own.

My Focus has it's fuel fill on the starboard side, my Escort has it on the port side.

On the whole, I like it on the starboard side better because there's no chance of me accidentally whacking my door against the protective bollards at the gas station. Also, back when I had cars with center-monted fuel fillers I tended to park with the gas pump on the starboard side of my car anyway.

Same.

No lever to open the door and no gas cap either. its kinda nice. =)

Sorry, but drivers side seems wrong. Pull up to the pump there's potential for not being able to open your door, or open it into a short post/pump/whatever.

I don't remember ever seeing a German car that didn't have the fuel fill on the starboard side, although I seem to recall some older Mercedes models that had it on the starboard side of the rear fascia.

Among American manufacturers, with the possible exception of the odd "captive import" model here and there, GM, Chrysler, and AMC stuck to center and port-side fuel fillers. Ford, on the other hand, put starboard-side fuel fillers on their "Fox" body cars (Fairmont, 79-04 Mustang, 80-88 Thunderbird, 81-82 Granada, 83-86 LTD, and their Mercury- and Lincoln-badged brethren) in 1978.

Useful trivia: Most cars actually indicate to the driver which side the fuel-port is on.

See the arrow?

I love it. Performs well and works perfectly. If you can handle the range it’s a fantastic car. Larger than any other pur evs. Second gen models can have up to a 40 kW battery. So approaching 200 mile range.

Buy used first GEN cheap and whet your palate for the future

I figured it out from driving so many rental cars over the years. When I told my older brother about it he didn't believe me until he went out and checked it on his three cars.

iirc, the Rogue was sold in Europe before coming to the US, where it's

Current fleet, all lefties (driver's side).... all Japanese brands.

Lexus sedan
Toyota minivan
Acura SUV

Extra oddity; all have different flavors of automatic/always on daytime running lights (Lexus & Acura have HID headlamps, so different secondary lamps are used for daytime running lights, whereas Sienna's headlights, at about 3/4 power are used). Add'l oddity; only the Lexus was in Japan.... the Toyota was made in USA, and the Acura was made in Canada.

I am thinking outlet about older cars, like 1960's era..

I think European and Japanese cars had the fuel on the driver's side since you usually get out and fill yourself.

American cars have it on the passenger's side since you had full service and you don't need to get out of the car. Easier to pull by the pump on the right side of the road and pull by a pump on the right side. Then just roll down the passenger's window and hand the cash to the attendant.

Here in NJ we have full service anyway, regardless of which type off car you drive, LOL

On the right side - opposite the charge port on our two PHEVs. Well, the charge ports are just in front of the drivers’ doors while the gas tank filler tubes are back of the rear doors. I’m going to have to buy gas for one of them just after the first of the year, the other will wait until spring.

'69 MB 280SL (US Mdl); fill on the right rear which is how I recall the
big German cars from the '60s - '70s. Although my '70 Ghia had the
fuel door on top of the front right fender just below the windshield.

Right side.

There is no 'stupid' side, only stupid people who drive up to the Costco pumps with the fill on the side opposite the pump.

Of course, they're more often driving a huge pickup or SUV parked three feet from the pump, as well.
