I have the last gen Airport Time Capsule whose drive has just died.

Looks doable to open and replace with a new drive. What are your thoughts on what drive I should be looking for?

You will destroy that thing getting it open and it's probably on its last legs from old age anyway.

Time for a new router. Asus supports network Time Machine with an external USB HD on most of theirs.

No, it's not that bad of an upgrade. The bottom cover might get marred a little put trying to get it off, but that isn't something you're going to see. I put an 8TB in mine a long time ago. I had to modify the rubber mounts inside the Time Capsule to accommodate the new drive since the corners were shaped differently from the stock drive (i.e. thicker at the corners, since smaller capacity drives sometimes have "thinner" corners - makes sense when you're looking at the drives).

Were you using the Time Capsule as a router/network backup or just for network backup? If as a router/network backup, I'd replace it with a quality router and separate network storage, i.e. Time machine-friendly NAS box. Apple's networking hardware is aging quickly and these days I wouldn't recommend it. The other benefit is that one device has no bearing on the other. Router goes kablooy? Disconnect the NAS box, replace the router, reconnect the NAS box. Done. NAS box goes kablooey? Don't replace the router. Replace the drive and/or the box. Done. Might not be as 100% dead easy to configure as a Time Capsule but, once it's configured it works nicely.

I've always used the Time Capsule as network backup only. I have a separate wi-fi router
for home networking and the macs on our network are all backed up on the Time Capsule.

I know I could get new replacement hardware to do everything, but I'd rather leave everything as is and just replace the drive.
