How is Reddit Using Battery
Posted by: graylocks

In the last day or so I noticed in Battery Health on my iphone that the Reddit app had used almost three hours in the background with about 9 minutes of active use. I thought that was odd as I have background refresh turned off for it in two different settings locations. Just now I see that for 14 minutes of actual use it had over 5 hours in the background and that's with me purposely closing the app each time i used it.

How is it possible that it is still burning battery in the background? I just deleted it as i'm curious to see if the battery life on my IP11 improves.

Reddit seems to be quite an energy hog. It's used almost as much as Safari.

in that same time period Safari had 7 minutes of screen time and no background time. on my phone i mostly use Safari to check MRF.

Thankfully, MRF is just a website and not a spyware app.

maybe i’ll try that. or maybe i can cut my redditting doom scrolling down a bit by just having it on my desktop.

You might try a different Reddit client. Apollo is supposed to be good.

That's interesting.

I have Reddit that is use on my computer regularly but haven't used it on my iPhone for several days. It doesn't even appear on my Battery Health list. Tile shows the most time with 1hr 22m of background. I'll keep that until I get the Apple tracker things. HondaLink shows the second most usage at 44min of background. I think I'll take that off since I don't ever use it purposefully.

Thanks for posting this-maybe I'll get better battery usage on my 12 mini after I take off the HondaLink app!

have you tried putting the phone in low power mode to see if these Apps still use that much battery?

I like how you can really quiet an App on a desktop, it seems that some iOS Apps still allow push notifications and some other background activity even if you kill them.

I recommend narwhal. It’s a well-designed client.
