Does anyone shoot film anymore?

Its been a loooong time since I looked at pricing for film development and scanning. Seems it would be fun to do once in a while if its not too expensive. I'm leaning toward medium format. I'd at least want low res images and then perhaps do high res scan for good shots....which might mean buying a scanner.

Is anyone doing this? Seems it would be satisfying to do once in a while.

If the answer is 'no', just don't respond.

TIL 220 film stopped being produced YEARS ago :-(

Really good boutique lab just a few blocks from my partner's work here in Seattle. Been in business for decades.

I still do but I develope and scan myself. I've always loved film, the look, the feel. I still have a fridge full of outdated film that I use. I've always been an experimenter so I do a lot of cross developing like E6 film in C41 chemistry, great color shifts. I also use an old Diana plastic camera that an instructor in my art school days made us buy, light leaks and all. Buying film and having someone else process can get expensive, but what is that one great shot that will give you goosebumps worth?

I have no desire at all to shoot and process film whatsoever! The quality of digital cameras, programs to process images, plus the quality of printers and papers available, negate any nostalgia for film.

I have heard other photogs say that skin tones can't be matched with digital to which I respond that skin tones can be rendered perfectly if you know what you're doing!

And, how many people want prints anymore? We all see images on our phones, computers, and tablets. How many prints do we actually see and how many will you make?

I have colleagues and friends-my age, of course-who still shoot film and print in a darkroom. That number is very rare though and they only print a small number of images and which stay in their homes, stacked on a shelf.

I applaud you wanting to do this, and medium format cameras and darkroom equipment are to be had for a song and a dance. I have a 4x5 view camera and two excellent lenses for it and I would love to get a fraction of the price for it that I paid!

But I sure don't miss mixing chemicals and following all the steps necessary for dealing with film...

I shot a roll of Ilford 120 with my Yashica-A TLR a few weeks ago.

I have been using The Darkroom (thedarkroom.com) for years. They can process about anything and price is around $15 a roll unless you want push/pull or cross processing which is more.

I recently (last year) bought a cache of darkroom equipment and chemistry at local auction. Sold off some of the enlarging lenses and got everything else for free. But no darkroom in this house! Got to do some 4x5 film I shot two years ago.

Destin Sandlin from smartereveryday on YouTube has talked about why he likes shooting film still. He also talked about it on his podcast NoDumbQuestions.

My best friend has been a professional photographer her entire life. She would agree with you and has often said digital photography has been extremely beneficial to her overall health.

I’ve been putting off e-cycling my Minolta film scanner. I haven’t used it in years and my last scsi host won’t boot.

My photography hobby is typically seasonal, in winter. I shoot both 35mm digital and 35mm film.

From my perspective film developing is best done today at home UNLESS you live near a lab and don’t have to pay shipping. Even so, the market has really gained steam recently for various at-home developing solutions, and YouTube is a great teacher. I could never afford film if I had to ship it out, and guess what if you give it to Walmart they do not give negs back. That’s a hard pass!

Skip the scanner. Today there are finally good ways to “scan digitally” and get results better than anything that’s not a mult-thousand drum scanner. You likely have a nice digital camera. The missing pieces have been film holders and nice light pads and both now exist. There are other things needed of course.

I still have Nikon F4, Mamiya 645AF, RB67 film cameras. I keep telling myself I will shoot some film but then I got a new digital camera, then another digital camera, then another digital camera.

Once you get into medium format, everything gets more expensive. Not sure what you”d have to spend on the kit needed to develop film, but it should be do-able if you can set up a small darkroom, which can be very small if you don’t need an enlarger and space for trays. A drying cabinet that you can keep dust-free would be a good idea. A scanner that can handle negs larger than 35mm won’t be cheap, unless you want to settle for a flatbed.
