I so want this deal (not sure why) but out of stock around here.

it is in Stock in pretty much any random zip code mid west or even in west coast, so you can order for local pick up or even free shipping.

some people on Slick Deals managed to order for local shipping and then change the address at checkout, that does not seem to work for me

It's interesting how ERP is 6db colder on channels 8-14.

The bandwidth per channel is the same though.

Odd

My sister and I had a Radio Shack walkie-talkie set when we were kids. We were lucky if it reached 25 feet! 25 miles is just amazing to me. They were illegal in the UK, though, so we had to leave them with our US relatives, and enjoy them every two years, or so.

25 miles is under absolutely perfect conditions which don’t exist outside of a lab.

yeah I looked at the box, 25 mile mountain to valley or mountain to mountain, basically straight line of sign.

5 miles open water, 1 mile in town.

They're UHF. LOS is all you get regardless of ERP. IIRC, there is a class of radios that uses the same frequencies that FMR does, but allows for the use of repeaters and rooftop antennas. That's the way to go if you want more range.

FRS is now limited to 2 watts of transmit power. IIRC, it used to be 1/2 watt. GMRS (license required) can go up to 50 watts, which significantly increases transmission range.

Who, outside of CERN, has a 25-mile lab, anyway?
