how to rip a streamed movie?
Posted by: Mr Downtown

Let me try this question again, more specifically.

If I “rent” or “buy” a streamed movie through iTunes or Vudu or HBOMax, what’s the cheapest and easiest way to rip or otherwise get a 90-second clip (with the sound) from the middle of that movie onto my hard drive as an MP4 or MOV? (Ultimately I want to show it as part of a PowerPoint about my neighborhood’s history). Googling the topic turns up lots of dubious-looking software to download, and it's very confusing. I suppose I could also go get a DVD of the movie if that would make things easier.

one way that I've used as a last resort is to use screen recording software. I just bring the video up full screen in a quiet room and let it run while the software records the screen and the mic picks up the audio. That would easily work for a powerpoint.

I use Screencast-o-matic

I don't know how (or if) it would work for a full movie on YouTube, but I've been using this successfully to grab and save short videos. I was able to take advantage of a special deal for a year for $9.97. Looks like they have a one month option for $3.99.

The copy protection on streamed videos will likely prevent your typical screen recording options from working. I have tried to do it with Netflix, iTunes and Prime and they use some sort of black magic.
All of the screenshot looks normal except for complete blackness for content.

Best bet is locating a DVD and ripping with Handbrake...

If you tell us what movie (or did you already?), maybe one of us owns it and can grab that section for you.

Never mind. I looked at your previous thread and saw it's North By Northwest. Don't own it.

There's a lot of "middle section" in a 2 hour plus movie. smiling smiley

I think you can use OS X's built in screen capture to do this.

I've used QT screen capture along with Soundflower to successfully record streaming HD Video & Sound off my laptop. There were videos on the web explaining.

Apologies to the anonymous forum member affected by my previous sig pic. It was my personal pic of a country expressing great grief as their leader, one of the most recognized people in the world, lay on his deathbed 8 years ago, days before he died. Like a naif, I did not realize it was offensively political, I considered it an expression of deep emotion and a reminder of the mortal coil's nature; that we all, great and small, can only hope to make a difference in our short time here, no matter the personal cost.

I'll post another pic from my work in South Africa that is, hopefully, apolitical.

I tried that on Netflix, it will show the CC but there is no image or audio.

Otherwise the entire copy protection would be a joke. I believe there are displays without DHCP which will NOT show Netflix and other protected video files.

I plan to show the clip of Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) and Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint) leaving the overnight 20th Century Ltd train in Chicago and walking into and through LaSalle Street Station. I'm giving a presentation tomorrow night on Chicago's historic train stations, and this footage (filmed on location in Dec. 1958) is one of the best surviving records we have of what the station (demolished in 1979) looked like on the inside.

I took the L out to a South Side library branch this afternoon to get the DVD, and I'll attempt to figure out Handbrake. If nothing else, I can have the DVD cued up and switch to it at the appropriate time.

Thanks, everyone.

Any options when using VLC or IINA?

Capto will do what you are looking for. I've done exactly what you are looking to do and the result was good. The file size is HUGE so after the capture I use Handbrake to make it smaller. [apps.apple.com]

I wouldn't bother using it to capture full movies or tv episodes as it ties up your computer for the full length of that time and you have to be really careful not to let any notifications pop up on your screen. It just isn't worth the hassle.

You know you can download the entire movie form the Archive.org link that Wurm provided.

On the right side, select MPEG. It's a 1.1G download but that's doable. You can trim it with QT player.

Thanks, guys. That archive.org repo was a stunning find, and I also had help (as a PM) from a very generous forum member.

My LED ACD is non-DHCP and AMZ won't show HD video on it, though they will rent or sell HD video to one with such a display.

I bought two HD videos from AMZ, then got a page that said there was something wrong with my kit that wouldn't allow HD so here's an SD version (480p), enjoy!

They didn't say anything about DHCP, just that the problem was 'mine'.

They did refund my purchases though.
