Anybody had their roof cleaned?

Our roof, about ten years old, has moss growing on it though not a lot. Ladders are death for me, so my wife had cleaned it in the past, but I'd like to hire it out now that she's no longer a spring chicken either. Anybody paid to have it done? I don't know what to expect as far as the process goes, except that bleach is a big no-no. What say ye? TIA

I have heard that bare copper wire across the roof spaced a couple of feet apart will keep the moss at bay. As for cleaning it, i am no help there. Good luck.

depends on the material/ Never ever ever power wash a roof made with asphalt tiles, because it washes the embedded gravel off.

I have the same issue, but have to replace the roof so I'm not going to worry about it. I mean, ultimately a layer of moss will protect the roof. Kind of.

That reminds me of a friend of mine who got inspired to clean years of accumulated pine straw off the roof of his trailer only to realize too late how much thermal insulation value that pine straw had been providing in the summer.

I have aa service that cleans my roof twice a year for $40 per visit. They spray some sort of cleaner on it and it's supposed to help preserve the asphalt tiles. No issues and the roof is now 18 yrs old

Yep. House Shampoo done last spring. Our house sits next to a wetland / nature preserve, and all the houses in the area gets algae / lichens / moss on the roof from the humidity in the area and it starts to look really bad after about 5 years.

The roof is 18 years old and went from looking like it needed to be replaced, to absolutely perfect looking and has stayed that way for 18 months now. 100% recommend!

It's a low pressure wash system, took a few hours to do.

How much of a difference did it make? 3 neighbors (out of 28 in the subdivision) had it done within weeks of us doing ours, we were the first. Seems like nobody knew you could do this.

$800 to do, with sealing the shingles included.

Yes, that's what the roofers put on my roof. The moss is terrible here due to all the trees. It's shaded and a great place for the moss to grow.

The zinc strips worked for about 10 years, then slowly the moss reappeared.

Hmm. Whenever I have removed moss from my roof, it always seemed moist. I would think that would be detrimental for a wood roof with asphalt shingles.

I can say from first hand experience that if you use the right nozzle the gravel does not come off. Of course test on a small spot first, but it did this last summer to remove a buncha dirt and moss on a shallow section of my roof and it worked wonders. Watch out below though as everything downwind will get wet and dirty. That one is for you Newt.
