Tire stuck around Colorado elk’s neck removed after 2 years
Posted by: DP

An elusive Colorado elk with a tire stuck around its neck for at least two years was freed of its appendage Saturday night when state wildlife officers tranquilized the bull and cut its antlers to remove the obstacle.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers Dawson Swanson and Murdoch received a report of the elk Saturday evening from a resident of Pine, roughly one mile south of Pine Junction on private property off of County Road 126. The elk — estimated to be about 4 1/2 years old and weighing more than 600 pounds with five points on each of its antler beams — was in a herd of about 40 other elk, according to the news release.

It appears they cut his antlers off so I wonder if he will be the target of other bull Elk now and not be able to defend himself. What they did was the right thing, just curious.

I think that elk will not have a very good time with the lady elks during this seasons rut. He may have to take a pass on reproducing this year and wait until next year. smiley-excited001

I didn't watch the video with sound, so perhaps they answered this. But why not cut the tire instead of cutting off its antlers? Wouldn't that have been easier all around?

That video was from 14 months ago based on sightings, they had not caught it and removed the tire yet.

The other thread on this discusses the tire. They were unable to cut through the bead on the tire, so they cut off the antlers instead.

I've been wondering the same.

As in Elkdom, it's the ladies saying 'Nice rack', and he's lacking, maybe his potentially missing out makes him less of a target from the young bucks.

Or maybe he's still a target, just because.

I applaud the rangers actions, but I hope they didn't put a bull's eye on him.

But what will be the reactions when they realize he misunderstood the part wear the rubber goes over the head.

Makes him less of a target for hunters.

See what I did there?

Not that I have anything against hunting if you are doing it for food, or sanctioned and scientifically reasonable population control.

The buck is now famous so some hunters will be gunning for him, rack or no rack.
