Roll Call - who has their credit card out already?
Posted by: sekker
Date: October 18, 2021 11:41AM
Once my work will let me place a purchase, I expect we will be ordering a number of new Macs from the lineup that will be announced today.

We've been waiting for the true 'Pro' models - we've purchased a MBA and an M1 iMac, but most are waiting for the word on the price/capabilities of these new Pro laptops (and maybe the rumored new Mini Pro).

Who else?

Maybe when the sting of two new iPhones wears off.

I was wondering why the "We'll be right back" logo was up.

Good to see you other losers who own the old fashion passé tech known as M1.

Just checked eBay, and it looks like my loaded M1 Mini can currently get around $13 on the open market today, but they say it'll be worth around $12 by tomorrow.

Will they announce one more chip for the Apple Silicon Mac Pro?

its the drive that boosts that price way up there... knock off $2000 with something a lot smaller.

And only $180 for the M1 MAX (24 GPU cores) over the M1 PRO CPU option, seems like a no brainer to me!

I could checkout with the above, with 64GB RAM and 2TB SSD for $3,759, and be very happy.

Plug the USB-C end of the magsafe 3 cable into the thunderbolt port on the MacBook for perpetual power!

But it will be nice to replace the cable when one end or the other frays, instead of the entire brick. Plus access to USB-C external batteries, maybe....?

Just trying to figure out whether it's worth the $200 difference to go for the CTO 24-core "Max" version vs the 32-core.

(Build off of the middle option.)

I think that since I'm not doing a lot in FCP these days I'll probably save the $200 bucks.

I'm thinking these CTO cores are going to get used for AI and other cool applications. But likely will be awhile before the software can utilize them all.

Agreed, depending on your replacement timeline those cores might well go unused.

EDIT- another consideration is to go for the 64GB RAM or not. Since it cannot be upgraded, ever, that makes me think go for it, but then I have no clear need for anything over 32 at this point. So probably not.

Okay so I'm ready to order - $2199 for 16gb/1tb, the base model 14" works for me otherwise. Looks like if I apply for Apple Card, there's a 3% rebate on all Apple purchases, so that'll save $66 for a net of $2134 + tax. There is a $20 upgrade charge for a 96w charger...I'm thinking I'll probably buy another charger anyway so just save that money and put it toward that extra one.

Will Costco, etc be same pricing when they arrive there? I'm thinking they won't be configurable with the SSD upgrades.

Any other money-saving tips y'all can recommend for this purchase? Thanks.

• Going through the Apple Education Store confers a discount. Are you at all connected with a K-12, College?

• Trading in your "old" model can also help (if the "old" model isn't "too old").

• Keep the SSD in a "reasonable" 1-2TB range. Unless you're storing many huge files on your drive, keep 'em in a cloud. Smaller SSDs will save money.

• Get the Apple Card for a further 3% reduction.

Noticed that custom configurations are already falling back to December deliveries, so keep little piece that in mind. Standard configurations may be available at an Apple Store once shipping starts next week (14" MBP).
