M1Pro vs M1Max - key differences

Bottom line: several key differences.

In terms of monitors, an interesting roadmap of existing Apple Silicon Macs.

Native external 6K monitor support plus second, non-6k monitor):

M1: 1

M1Pro: 2

M1Max: 3

Other differences summarized at Tom's place too.

thanks for these -- cant wait for benchmarks next week.

FWIW, these articles all seem to be a rehashing of the keynote, broken down some. I didn't see any new info beyond what was already given us, or what could be gleaned in a few minutes on apples dite..

Dunno if I get this headline from AI:
New M1 Pro, M1 Max MacBook Pros support more displays than M1 Macs

No @#$%& Sherlock. that's really the best takeaway AI got?

Peeps arent thrilled with the HDMI only being 2.0 rather than 2.1. I think its a waste since it only does one thing. A 4th USB C would have been better.

The HDMI port is sharing bandwidth from the SD card slot and perhaps the audio port. 3 TB3 ports plus a charger plus HDMI plus SD plus audio, without a dongle, seems like a great mix. The SD card slot will be how I will expand storage.

if that were the case, sure? We would have to see the detailed tech specs on USB C vs HDMI power draw. USB C to HDMI cables are cheap, so, meh.

Sure, SD slot could work for storage, but only UHS 1... so limited and SD cards aint cheap...

No doubt select reviewers have had the M1 MPB for awhile now, and more detailed reviews will be coming.

Often various reviewers are embargoed on releasing reviews until a specified time has elapsed, but we should see some soon.

If you have 13 minutes, and can stand this guy, he has 12 things apple *didn't* mention in the keynote.

From a quick skim, a big overlooked difference between Pro and Max is that the bandwidth on the Pro is "only" 200Gbps, while on the Max it's 400Gbps.

I don't need the extra graphics cores, but I definitely want the access to memory to be twice as fast!

Yeah. that's where the 24 Core M1M comes into play. $600 bump to get the faster memory + 32 GB RAM.

that's the kit with the best bang for $ if you want the most power for the $. $3330.

That caught my eye too, but I want to see a real world speed improvement before handing over money.

I would much rather have it as a Thundercrap port instead of HDMI 2.0. It's like the interface specification was set in stone four years ago.

I do need extra graphics cores (for gaming). To me, the increased number of graphics cores and the doubled throughput of the Max are its biggest selling points.

Im clueless since I don't game anymore... out of curiosity what kind of Mac games can use all that GPU?

Or is it online gaming? Steam?

Would be amazingly awesome if they could get Bootcamp to work again.

Well, remains to be seen what will be possible with various combinations of SoCs and cores, but if nothing else, more graphics cores provides better futureproofing.

Honestly, WoW (my primary game) performs pretty damn well on my M1 mini with eight GCs - I don't always get 60 FPS, but I also almost never drop below, say, 40 FPS. I'm excited to see what's possible with even just 24 GCs.

It is what it is.
