What type of paint to change color on Merry Go Round Horse
Posted by: Microman

Wife got this smaller size Merry Go Round Horse.

Apparently she doesn't like the color assortment.

What type of paint (Looks to be Shiny) and is there a gloss coat that is sprayed over it?

Will search google for painting a Merry Go Round horse and see what I come up ............. with (Preposition)

I would use an oil-based enamel for it. High gloss and durable, needs paint thinner/turpentine to clean up. Do it in a well ventilated location, unless you just like the paint “fumes” smiley-excited001

Hard to say from a picture, but likely enamel.

Another vote for oil-based enamel.

Seeing that horse reminds me of the Circle of Fear episode "Dark Vengeance"-

It made me cast a suspicious eye on Merry-Go-Round horses for years afterwards.

Enamel. A gotcha with enamel though is that its solvents won't eat into the original paint like lacquer would to make a strong bond and resist flaking off. Sanding would be of huge importance, even down into small crevices. The idea is to rough it up enough for the new paint to mechanically grab onto it (as opposed to chemical with lacquer), but not so rough as to show through the new paint. I would do a test area that's not visible. Start with wiping with acetone in case there are any traces of wax or oil that would affect adhesion, let that dry, and sand off all traces of shinyness, with 320 grit. If sanding marks show through, go to 400.

I never see a label that says “Lead Free” nor “Now With Lead.”

Why would anyone want to? Ridding of lead from paint but especially from gasoline has provided significant public health benefit, particularly among children.

They used to still allow the manufacturing of a red lead primer mostly used by the DOT to prime the metal parts of bridges and overpasses, even after lead was removed from paint.
It had lots of warning labels and I think you had to have a license to buy it.

Yep. Still made.

The Navy still uses lead based primer too.

I have a US Navy manual downstairs with all the recipes. Naval Artificer's Manual.
