MBKHD gives the Rivian R1T a First Look

He gets a day (30hrs?) with a Rivian R1T electric pickup truck.

The R1T is a compact (?) pickup truck that has a lot of nice touches, brisk performance, and a 300+ mile range.

I'd still prefer the Ford Lightning, but maybe once Rivian has a good track record, that could change.

Like the Lightning, it has a front trunk, which to a non-truck guy like myself, is a game changer.

The gear tunnel and appliance option are pretty cool too.

I don't know if he's going to get to do a 'full review', but this one does highlight a lot of good things.

The front light bar is pretty trick, too.

Interesting that Rivian is inviting Tech channels/writers to review the truck, but NOT Car channels/writers.

They were testing in Colorado, but snubbed the TFL channels, which love testing 4x4s!

Not sure why, it really does seem to be a capable 4x4. Link to video:

It's not really compact. It just isn't a full size bed. The camoflauged it in development by parking an F150 body on it. It has an extended cap and it has a gear tunnel behind the back seats.

It's very capable off-road. I think the biggest fault with the Rivian is that it isn't a Tesla. I'm not particularly wedded to Tesla, but their charging infrastructure is a BIG selling point. I've had 3rd party commercial chargers not work more often than they have worked. So if I were driving a pure EV that wasn't from Tesla, road trips would be a challenge. My Volt allows me to just keep driving for now. But as gas stations close that will become an issue.

This decision is easy. They will follow what Tesla showed - be sure to compare apples to apples.

Tech reporters will compare it to a Tesla and highlight what it has instead of a model X or Y.

Car reporters will focus on what it doesn't have compared to an ICE pickup truck.

For the folks with AppleTV+, check out Long Way Up with Ewan McGregor. He, and his crew, take some prototype electric Harley's and Rivian's from the tip of South America to LA. I enjoyed all 3 seasons of his motorcycle adventures.

If it's a reliable vehicle, it should do well. I love that color. I do think the Ford is going to sell like nobody's business.

Same here, I fully enjoyed all three series.

A lot of people bagged on the series, the two riders, the H-D Live Wires, and the Rivians, for the oddest reasons, wholly missing the point of Long Way Up.

I thought the vehicles did well as prototypes, modified and not designed for the trip.

Choosing between a Rivian and Lightning, I'd probably go with the latter, given a longer track record in manufacturing, if not making an eV.

But the Rivian does have some interesting features, and is more of an off road vehicle, an aspect of which I'd have no use.

However, if someone gifted me either, I'd be ecstatic.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Long Way Up... (and the previous two series immensely as well).

I kept thinking that they should have done a 3 part "add-on" series following the Rivian team who blazed the trail, installing charge points from the tip of South America to Mexico.
Credit where it's due - those folks went above and beyond!

Wow.

This could be a contender.

I am buying an EV in about a year.

Used Model S was at he top of the list, but this might unseat it.

Cons: The laggy map scrolling
No self-driving software

But 800 HP & 3.0 to 60? Yowza.

Not a PU guy, but I like it better than the SUV version they have.
