All the way to Monterey? Who's updating their Macs?
Posted by: sekker
Date: October 25, 2021 12:43PM
I'm typing this on a machine that's happily running Catalina. Still more useful in terms of my personal workflow in general than Big Sur.

I might update an M1 Mac - but only AFTER you bleeding-edge folk have ironed out a few of the key issues first!

WHY, WHY WHY?

It's crazy that users sign up for this crap after all the previous hard, dry bonings Apple has given us.

Not a chance. Not until at least version x.2.

I'm sitting on 10.14 on my 2017 imac - I prepped it to be ready for 64bit, but didn't like the look of 10.15 or big sur on my other machines. But it's time to upgrade. I'll be going with Monterey after a few .01 updates.

chopper and his gang can languish in the past while dealing with more and more gremlins as time goes by, but I just can't do that.

I was trying to help an older couple in the print biz back in the early days of OS X. THey had a smaller setup with a current computer, but they had a big monster system in the back that they wanted to get going again. It cost a lot of money and they were damned if they were going to let it languish. It was a system 6 operation. I apologized but told them there was nothing I could do - the system needed to be updated, but I don't think it was OS 7 compliant.

I PROMISED myself that I wouldn't become one of those old people that clung to the past with a vice-like grip, but it's happening. MUST RESIST!

As always, hold off on upgrades on any critical machines (like those used for your business) and don't even consider upgrading those Macs until at least the 3rd or 4th point-update.

Make sure that you have a good current backup prior to installing an OS upgrade.

It's a good idea to reboot, do a smart check, verify with the Disk Utility before installing a new OS, just in case some problem has been lurking.

Do not upgrade if you have any problems with your Mac. Upgrading does not fix your crashes/hangs. It just compounds your problems by adding the new problems from the new OS.

I'm still on Sierra(MBA) and High Sierra(iMac). I think my wife's MBA is on Mojave.

My understanding is the Apple Silicon machines will not run any OS version prior to Big Sur.

What OS is this now; 12 or 13 or 22? How many complete new OS's in a couple of years? How about just one stable OS that will last awhile?

It would break the bank to have to update (not "upgrade") the programs I use that won't work past Mojave.

A little break from the grief...

Can you backwards-upgrade with a VM? I'd just as soon keep Mojave as my primary OS but I'm looking at either an "upgrade" to keep using TurboTax or hiring an accountant. Would be fine with me to load up Catalina on a VM just for that purpose and leave the rest of my system alone...

O-M-G!

(And LOL!)

This is the first time in my entire life that I've seen that phrase completed!

Seriously.

I've only ever heard the first half, and then the speaker trails off, as if everybody knows what the other shoe brings.

I've heard that since forever and internally assigned the appropriate meaning without ever knowing how the sentence was finished.

Huh.

There's some satisfaction in knowing, after all these years.

As to updating, I have one Mac, a 2012 mini that I need to keep on Sierra, as far as I know.

But I've got a 2018 mini on Catalina, an MB on High Sierra, and this M1 MBA on Big Sur.

So I've got a couple of Macs that I can update without major worry, so I'll see how it goes.

I wonder if Monterey will let me set up Hidden Email with anybody.

I've done it on my 'Phone and it carries over to at least one Mac, but I have no way to start it on a Mac yet, if that's possible.

That would probably be the single biggest benefit in upgrading for me.

Chop makes a good point, in that there is a masochistic cycle that even august members of this forum subject themselves to when upgrading.

So to that end, the 'if it ain't broke...' types are happy were they are, I'm happy forum.

I update my 'Phone, Watch, and iPad right aways, but am slow to move forward on the macOS front.

Sometimes being three or four versions behind isn't really a bad thing.

Heck, I'm still running a SL VM on my cMP running Sierra. I really wish I could port my SL VM to run under Big Sur, but I don't think it will.

I have Big Sur on my M1 mini. I've only played with it a little and so far don't really care for it. I was on SL for a long time, then on Mavericks for a really long time. Finally updated to Sierra last year.

This my point! Why aren't we cheering when a new OS comes out? Slowly, over time, we've (for the most part) come to be suspect of a new OS announcement rather than anticipating new cool stuff! And when Apple announces a new OS after the latest is out for only a couple of weeks, it isn't masochistic when it doesn't generate much trust and you don't feel confident about updating...

A little break from the grief...

I think Mac OS represents the schizophrenia inside apple. The design language around Big Sur was clearly written for a touch screen Mac. Others within Apple are refusing the idea.

My recommendation after moving to Big Sur from Mojave and Catalina machines - unless you have a compelling reason for Big Sur (ie M1 macs), you are likely better served by the older Mac OS versions.

This transition feels a lot like SL to Lion. You lost a LOT with Lion (including ending support for original Intel Macs), and gained very little.

Except - you get apple silicon this time. Which is a big deal.

I’m hoping Monterey represents a new 10.8 - an OS where it makes sense to upgrade every years for the next 4-5 years.

I'm still running Mavericks on my Hackintosh. I am about to upgrade to Mojave since I got a new WIFI/BT card that works natively and want the iPhone integration, but I doubt past that.
