Sound mystery on friend's iDevices

A friend suddenly gets no sound from Facebook or YouTube videos on her iPad and iPhone. Nothing is muted, and alert sounds work. Any ideas on where to look? Nothing in her Sounds settings seems amiss.

A friend of mine had problems with sound muted while recording video.
We talked about instagram hijacking mics and cameras…
Anyway, hard-quit instagram. Or restart the device.
That’s all I got.

We tried completely quitting those apps plus others that might play video. Still the same result on both iPhone and iPad. It's baffling. This just started yesterday.

I had her delete the YouTube app and reinstall it from the App Store. I didn't feel too hopeful, but figured it was worth a shot. It still plays videos without audio. Seems like it has to be some global setting, but how to find it?

The number of settings you have to plow through in iOS is just painful. It doesn't help that she has so many apps on her phone and iPad. Something may have hijacked the audio aspect of any video she plays, but figuring out what is going to be unpleasant, to say the least.

Assuming we can't find the problem, is it worth a trip to the Apple store? I would have to take the iPad there, as she has mobility problems. Would this be a paid genius visit?

Apparently this has been an issue for some people since iOS 14.

Follow These Quick Tips To Get Sound Back On Your iPad!

Toggle Mono Audio On and Off
Plug and unplug headphones for devices with a headphone jack
Toggle your iPad’s Side Switch (if applicable)
Change your iPad’s Side Switch Setting to lock orientation instead of mute
Open Control Center and adjust Mute or Volume from there
Toggle Bluetooth Off and On
Check the Do Not Disturb is off
Restart or force restart your iPad

The one I bolded was the second thing I tried and that was the solution. Somehow the volume setting in Control Center had been set back to zero. This happened to both her iPhone and her iPad the same day. Weird.
